Destiny 2 Skimmer Guide: How to Get the New Hoverboard

Surf's up during Guardian Games All-Stars.

Destiny 2 developer Bungie just introduced the first new vehicle category in franchise history. After nearly a decade of riding around on Sparrow hoverbikes, players can now earn a hoverboard called a Skimmer during the Guardian Games All-Stars event that began on March 5. They riff on the Skyboards ridden by the Cloud Striders of Neomuna and will be a permanent addition to the game — but you'll have to do a special quest to keep your first Skimmer.

How Do Skimmers Work

"Skimmers will live in the same slot as your Sparrows and can be used to do tricks, grind rails, or just stylishly skim around looking incredibly cool," the February 29 This Week in Destiny (TWID) blog post reads. Since they "live in the same slot" as the Sparrow, Skimmers can be equipped on the Vehicle field in character customization near ships, and they'll presumably have similar functions and speeds. Players can already do tricks on most Sparrows with some limitations. Standing on a board, however, makes for a lot more agility and trick options. Most notably, players will be able to "grind rails" which we see on display briefly in the event trailer at the 13-second mark:

Presumably, as you ride your Skimmer around, you’ll see glowing trails across any surfaces that you can grind on, and all you’ll have to do is just up to connect with the stream of energy to grind like you might with a skateboard.

How to Earn and Keep the Allstar Vector Skimmer

The Allstar Vector Skimmer isavailable to all players during the Guardian Games All-Stars. The February 29 TWID confirms that players have to complete the Guardian Games onboarding quest from Eva Levante to earn the Allstar Vector. If players want to keep it forever, however, they’ll have to complete the Drop In quest.

The onboarding quest called Best in Class has eight steps that walk you through the basics of the Guardian Games. After speaking with Eva Levante in the Tower, follow these steps to get your very first Skimmer:

  1. Purchase a card from Eva Levante
  2. Wearing your Guardian Games class item, complete a Supremacy match or a Guardian Games playlist activity
  3. Speak with Eva
  4. Deposit your Medallion at the Guardian Games podium
  5. Claim your first event challenge in your Quest tab
  6. Speak with Zavala
  7. Speak with Shaxx
  8. Speak with Eva

Once you wrap Best in Class, you'll get a common-tier Allstar Vector Skimmer that expires at the end of Guardian Games. To upgrade it to exotic tier and keep it forever, you'll have to complete the Drop In quest Eva gives you at the end of Best in Class.

Complete ANY of the following objectives to earn the Skimmer.

  • Medallion Score (0 / 1,200)
  • Earn a top 10% score in Nightfall challenges.
  • Open your Focus Activity winners packages. (0 / 3)

If you play a lot of Destiny 2 during the event, you're bound to reach a 1,200 Medallion Score — but that's definitely the marathon option here. Bronze Medallions are worth 1, Silver worth 2, Gold worth 5, and Platinum worth 15. The newly introduced Diamond Medallions are worth even more (but it's unclear how much just yet). For hardcore players who want to get this locked ASAP, earning a top 10% score in Nightfall is a real challenge but, theoretically, the fastest way to complete this quest. Focus Activity winners packages can also be fairly quick, but these special activities are not always active. Every few hours, one of the Guardian Games playlists becomes the Focus Activity. If you do well in these, then you could square it away with a single win.

How to Get the Winged Wolf Skimmer

Another Skimmer is also available for purchase at the Eververse store during the Games as part of the Gjallarheart Gear Bundle. The entire set is inspired by Norse mythology and in turn evokes the iconic Gjallarhorn weapon design. There's an armor set and weapon ornament for Thunderlord, but it's the gear bundle that includes the Skimmer. For 2,500 Silver you get a Ghost shell, Ship, a Shader, and the Winged Wolf Skimmer. Unless you already have the Silver, you'll have to spend $29.99 to get 3000 (+500 bonus) Silver. Spending $19.99 only gets you 2300 Silver.

While these are just the first two presented in the new Vehicle type, so we're bound to see plenty more arrive in the coming years.
