Destiny 2’s Season of the Wish just introduced a bonafide roguelite dungeon-crawler game mode called The Coil, and it’s everything we could’ve wished for and more. Last season dabbled in a deck-building mechanic, so this presents another interesting experiment on classic Destiny gameplay. It involves spending Fused Wishing Glass to unlock Dragon’s Gift perks.
What is The Coil?
A major part of working with Riven involves participating in Riven’s Lair, a straightforward dungeon-crawl leading to a boss fight in which player’s defend Riven from various threats. The Coil is a more intense variation that incorporates the aforementioned roguelite aspects to really challenge players. It’s functionally the same as standard Riven’s Lair, but involves four pathways of escalating difficulty. Difficulty scales similar to Deep Dives, and overall intensity is comparable to Legendary Campaigns. The most unique part of the experience involves collecting Fused Wishing Glass to purchase buffs called Dragon’s Gifts from Riven.
How to Unlock The Coil
To unlock The Coil, players first have to complete the season’s opening mission called Last Wish and then every step in Week 1 of the seasonal questline called Wishing All the Best. Here’s a quick rundown of each step:
- Speak to Riven
- Search for Riven's eggs in Riven's Lair.
- Speak with Petra at the holoprojector.
- Complete Blind Well runs in the Dreaming City.
- Complete the mission "Polysemy" and retrieve Riven's egg.
- Listen to Mara and Osiris in the H.E.L.M.
- Speak to Riven
Once you’ve completed all that, Riven will give you a Lair Key, which grants bonus rewards during Riven’s Lair runs. She also gives you the Caught in The Coil side quest, which unlocks the Coil with the following tasks:
“In The Coil, spend a Lair Key by looting a Lair Chest, earn a high score as a fireteam by collecting Wishing Glass Shards within Lair pathways, and purchase a Dragon's Gift from Riven. Lair Keys can be obtained by completing activities anywhere in the system. Lair keys are automatically redeemed when opening Lair Chests, improving the rewards.”
As such, Caught in The Coil is your introduction to The Coil activity. It’s essentially a harder version of Riven’s Lair.
How to Collect Fused Wishing Glass
Fused Wishing Glass is described as “crystalline fragments of condensed potential and wishes,” and it’s the primary currency used in The Coil. Every time you launch into the activity, you’ll spawn in the room that houses the Spirit of Riven with a large pot in front of you. Destroying the pot and claiming its contents gives each member of the fireteam 100 Fused Wishing Glass.
More Wishing Glass drops from combatants, Glass Collectors, and pots throughout each pathway. They also come in various colors and rarities. Once a pathway is completed, you’ll wind up back at Riven where you can purchase more Dragon’s Gifts — if you can afford to.
How to Purchase Dragon’s Gifts
Dragon’s Gifts are purchased directly from Riven’s spirit in between pathway runs in The Coil. After destroying the pot at the start of the activity and claiming your first bundle of Fused Wishing Glass, you have 30 seconds to spend those 100 pieces on a Tier 1 Dragon’s Gift. There’ll always be three randomly generated options, and each Tier 1 option costs 100.
After completing subsequent pathways and earning more Wishing Glass, you can spend more Fused Glass on Tier 2 and Tier 3 options. These are randomized each run with 3 options at Tiers 1 and 2 then 2 options at Tier 3. New Gifts are added following each successive run, and there’s no cap on the number you can buy. You’re only limited by the Wishing Glass in your wallet. Here’s a breakdown of the cost of Dragon’s Gifts by Tier:
- Tier 1 - 100 Wishing Glass
- Tier 2 - 250 Wishing Glass
- Tier 3 - 400 Wishing Glass
Note that depending on the rotating modifiers for the activity and what Gifts pop up on your particular run, you may want to adjust your build after every pathway. For instance, if the modifiers boost sword and trace rifle damage, but then you pick up an Arc damage boost as a Dragon’s Gift, then you might want to consider an Arc subclass with an Arc-powered trace rifle and sword.
Purchasing Dragon's Gifts using Fused Wishing Glass completes the Rolled Stats triumph for the seasonal Wishbearer title.
This season is all about Riven, the last Ahamkara slain by the Vanguard during the Last Wish raid capable of granting wishes. The Witch Queen Savathun’s secret final wish, as revealed at the end of the last season, was for the ability to pursue the Witness into the Traveler’s Pale Heart. So as the story hurdles towards The Final Shape, the player has to help the spirit of Riven track down her missing eggs during Season of the Wish. Only then will the Ahamkara grant the wish.
