Bungie has been humming along on the Destiny 2 train for nearly four years now. Along the way the title has changed a whole lot. With expansion packs, the addition of seasonal models, and the base game going free to play. You may find yourself wondering if the game supports crossplay for progression and multiplayer between each platform. That’s what we’re here to answer!
Here’s everything you need to know about Destiny 2 and crossplay, along with what how the title will handle the new console generation.
Does Destiny 2 Have Crossplay?
Destiny 2 has cross progression, but not true crossplay. Bungie calls this feature cross save, letting you play the same three Guardians regardless of which platform you’re on. If you haven’t done so, you can set up cross save here. Once you’ve activated this feature, your weapons, gear, ornaments, and season passes will be active. Say you mainly play on PC through Steam, you can also log into your PlayStation 4 and play the exact same content.
The only exception is expansion packs. This is likely due to the platform owners not wanting to sign away all of their potential profits. If you want to play Shadowkeep or Forsaken, you’ll need to purchase those expansions once again. That’s obviously not cheap considering Forsaken still runs $25 when not on sale. Shadowkeep is a full $35 and Beyond Light will make things more expensive at $40.
If you want to play Destiny 2, with all content unlocked across two platforms, it’ll run you around $200 assuming you’re yet to purchase any expansion packs. Needless to say, that’s not cheap. We recommend waiting for sales to get the older content on discount.
Another option is to wait until sometime this Fall when Bungie is adding Destiny 2 and all of its expansions to Xbox Game Pass. This includes Beyond Light when it releases in November.
Proper crossplay is something that Bungie is interested in doing. Its current best guess for a release date is sometime in 2021 at the earliest. Targeted platforms include PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Google Stadia. Prior to that they hope to release inter-platform crossplay before the end of this year. That means Xbox One to Xbox Series X and PS4 to PS5.
We’ll be among the first to let you know when Bungie has more solid plans to share. For now, your only option is to swap over to the same platform as your friend if you want to play together.

How Will Destiny 2 Handle New Consoles?
If you’re playing on PS4 or Xbox One and wondering how Bungie plans to handle upgrades to the next console generation, we have some good news. All purchased content will migrate with you including expansions, season passes, and more. The upgrade will be free on PlayStation and the Xbox version does support the new Smart Delivery system which lets you play across both platforms with only one purchase.
