Path of Exile offers plenty of opportunities to see the story through on your own, but it’s a multiplayer experience by nature. The thrill of encountering other players to play or trade with is ever present and for good reason. Tearing enemies to pieces with floating poisonous blades and annihilating demi-gods are activities best enjoyed in group, but depending on the situation, not all of your friends may be on the same platform. This guide covers everything we know about crossplay and cross save for Path of Exile.
Does Path of Exile Have Crossplay Support?
Sadly, it does not. Developer Grinding Gear Games has no plans to add cross platform play to PoE at the moment. This is a shame considering the frantic dungeon crawler is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, which would make for the perfect opportunity to implement this.
This may be due to a variety of reasons, aside from the fact that it’s not as simple as toggling a crossplay switch for the feature to magically appear in each versin of the game. In a tweet from 2018, the developer responded to a player that “different console platforms play on their own separate servers,” which might hint at the reason why.
It’s a bummer! But at the very least, Windows and Mac users can play with each other, in case you were curious.
Does Path of Exile Have Cross Save Support?
It does not have cross save either! There are currently no plans to implement cross save to PoE for the time being. While it isn’t as groundbreaking as crossplay, this feature would easily allow you to have the game on multiple platforms without having to start from scratch.
This way you could use your PC account details on PS4 or Xbox One, catch up with your friends there, and switch seamlessly between them. Plus, since PoE doesn’t have paid expansions, your version would always be up to date without any monetary restrictions in between (looking at you, Destiny.)
We would be keen on the idea if crossplay proves to be too complicated or out of scope for the team to implement in the near future, but alas, we’ll have to wait and see. Oh, but in case you were wondering, cross save is also enabled between Windows and Mac. You can just use the same login details as your progress gets uploaded to the cloud.
Will Path of Exile 2 Support Cross Platform Play and Cross Save?
Great question. While we didn’t get to see these features implemented in the first game as of yet, Path of Exile 2 would greatly benefit from them. Nothing is confirmed at the moment, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t crossed the team’s minds.
During a press Q&A, Wccftech asked GGG producer Chris Wilson whether or not we could see Path of Exile 2 on PS4 and Xbox One, specifically. Wilson replied that “Path of Exile 2 will very likely be a PC and next-gen console exclusive (referring to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) with crossplay being something the team is looking into.”
And there you have it. We will only have to wait and see how PoE 2 fares in the future, but until then, our biggest hope is that Sony doesn’t slow down the process.
[Disclaimer: Tencent, the parent company that owns Fanbyte, is also a majority holder of Grinding Gear Games, the developer of Path of Exile. That being said, there is no direct nor indirect involvement in coverage whatsoever. We do share the love for hack-n-slash games, but that’s about it, really.]
