Destiny 2 Beyond Light Power Cap Guide - What Is the New Power Cap?

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is almost here, which means there’s a new max Power Level to grind to. With the raid boasting a minimum Light of 1230, players will be rushing to hit the new power cap. However, this isn’t as bad as it sounds, since there are a bunch of solid methods for increasing your strength. Remember, methods such as turning in vendor tokens to hit the soft cap no longer works. This was changed with Beyond Light to ensure that players couldn’t just breeze through the first 140 levels with ease. Additionally, some sources for Powerful and Pinnacle rewards have changed, so don’t expect old raids to offer top tier gear.

Finally, this is not a guide to get you ready for day one raiding. Reaching the required power of 1230 in two weeks requires far more micromanagement. While it’s certainly achievable, we will be focusing on what the average player will need to go through to hit max power. How long this will take entirely depends on the time you invest and if RNG is on your side.

(Author’s Note: We will update this guide once we have the full list of Pinnacle and Powerful sources available, which doesn’t appear to unlock until after the main story.)

Destiny 2 Beyond Light Power Cap

In Beyond Light, there are three different caps you need to be aware of. Each one will take time to reach, with the final stretch being the longest grind. Before we get into the details, here are the three different power caps in Destiny 2’s latest expansion:

  • Soft Cap – 1200 Power
  • Hard Cap – 1250 Power
  • Pinnacle Cap – 1260 Power

For the unaware, a “Soft Cap” determined what your basic Rare (blue) and Legendary (purple) gear will drop up to. When you start Beyond Light, you will be pelted with Rare rewards that will typically have 1-3 power above your current gear. This will slowly, but surely increase your power until you hit 1200 Light. You shouldn’t need to worry about grinding too much when reaching the soft cap. Just going through the campaign will provide you with a lot of drops to improve your Guardian. Additionally, activities such as Heroic Public Events and Lost Sectors are good to grind since they are fast and provide a decent amount of loot. You can also grind strikes, just make sure you do not have the weekly element equipped so you don’t risk getting the Vanguard pinnacle drop.

As for the Hard Cap, this can be achieved by completing Powerful and Pinnacle rewards, as well as Exotic quests and decrypting Prime Engrams. This will take a little more work to complete and will most likely require you to grind across three different characters if you hope to be raid ready by November 21st. Finally, the Pinnacle Cap can only be achieved by Pinnacle sources such as the new, untitled raid. The amount of sources you’ll have for this is severely diminished, so don’t expect to get close to this in a week. Instead, you should just shoot fort 1260 by the end of the entire season. Just remember, every piece of your gear has to be 1260 for you to reach this cap since the artifact’s power resets every season.
