How to Get Opulent Umbral Energy in Destiny 2 Season of the Haunted

Scythe to meet you.

Destiny 2 Season of the Haunted is here, and it’s the spookiest addition yet. With the return of Emperor Calus’ mighty Leviathan, players are tasked with venturing into this massive ship to deduce what has happened to this corrupted vessel. Along with the new Nightmare Containment activity, players can earn new weapons, armor, and cosmetics for your Guardian. The Leviathan is also a brand new patrol zone, allowing players to freely explore this haunted ship to their heart’s content. Did I also mention there’s a new dungeon dropping this Friday? Yeah, there’s a lot to do in Season 17.

With a new season comes two more currencies that players will need to grind for. While the main one is Vestiges of Dread, you will also need Opulent Umbral Energy. This is used to focus your Umbral Engrams into Season of the Haunted weapons and armor. Given you will want a lot of these to craft all the new weapons, here’s a guide on how to earn Opulent Umbral Energy.

Destiny 2 Opulent Umbral Energy

How to Get Opulent Umbral Energy

In order to get Opulent Umbral Energy, you will need to open up the second chest at the end of the Containment activity in the Leviathan. This activity is accessible both through the Destination menu or if you’re exploring the Leviathan on your own. Unlike other seasonal activities, it’s not a locked instance, meaning you will often see people just wander in and out of the fight as they explore the Castellum.

However, players who want to farm this activity are encouraged to pick the Containment option in the Destination menu. Doing so will drop you right by where the activity is, usually, already in progress. After you complete the encounter, approach the distorted key behind the chest. You’ll be given an option to spend 500 Vestiges of Dread to earn some loot. Not only will this net you some new seasonal gear, but you’ll also get seven Opulent Umbral Energy. Given you need 27 Opulent Umbral Energy to focus a single new gun, be prepared to farm this activity a lot.

More Destiny 2:

Thankfully, you will unlock more ways to earn this material as the season progresses and you unlock new upgrades in the Crown of Sorrow at the H.E.L.M. Found in the “Manifesting” column, there are a number of options that will offer additional avenues to earn Opulent Umbral Energy. For example, the Umbral Energy Chests upgrade gives you this material for opening up chests in the Leviathan.

Some of these will not be available right away since they require a specific amount of unlocked upgrades to become available. Since it will take some time before you even have the ability to focus Umbral Engrams into seasonal weapons, I wouldn’t worry too much about farming this material right now. Good luck out there, Guardians!
