How to Get Opulent Keys - Destiny 2 Season of the Haunted

Lock and key.

Destiny 2 Season of the Haunted is here, and it’s the spookiest addition yet. With the return of Emperor Calus’ mighty Leviathan, players are tasked with venturing into this massive ship to deduce what has happened to this corrupted vessel. Along with the new Nightmare Containment activity, players can earn new weapons, armor, and cosmetics for your Guardian. The Leviathan is also a brand new patrol zone, allowing players to freely explore this haunted ship to their heart’s content. Did I also mention there’s a new dungeon dropping this Friday? Yeah, there’s a lot to do in Season 17.

Unsurprisingly, there are few secrets hidden throughout this derelict ship, such as the Calus Bobblehead and Opulent Key chests. While we have covered the former already, the latter is a new item you can earn in the Castellum to unlock hidden chests throughout the patrol zone. These award players with a piece of seasonal gear and some Vestiges of Dread, so it’s worth opening these chests.

How to Get Opulent Keys

There are three ways to obtain Opulent Keys at the time of writing this, all of which involve opening chests in the new Leviathan patrol zone. These are Destination, Haunted Alcove, and Containment Chests.

The first is Destination Chests, which are the basic chests you’ll find hidden throughout the different areas of the Leviathan such as the Royal Pools and Pleasure Garden. You aren’t guaranteed one upon opening a chest, so it may take multiple tries to obtain one of these keys. So far, these seem to have the lowest drop rate, but if you’re farming Vestiges of Dread it can be a nice way to get a couple of keys as you complete patrols and kill Nightmares.

Haunted Chests require a little more work, as you’ll need to slay a mini-boss that randomly spawns in either the Royal Pools or Pleasure Garden. There are four in total (two in each of the main areas), and you may need to hang around a bit before one becomes active. I recommend using YouTuber Reddi41’s video above, which does a quick and concise job of showcasing where they are located. You won’t always get an Opulent Key, and any additional loot appears to be from the world pool.

Your Third method is Containment chests, which are the random chests at the end of this activity. Upon completing this activity, you will have around two minutes to locate two hidden chests in the main room where you were finishing this Public Event. There are several locked doors, two of which will randomly be available upon successfully killing the final Containment boss. These can be a bit tricky to find, so I strongly suggest you use a Treasure Hunter mod on your Ghost, as this will highlight the chest’s locations when you get close.

Just run around the perimeter of the main room until you see a chest and head towards the door it’s behind. You should see a lever that can be interacted with, so throw the switch to open the door. Remember, which rooms will be unlocked is entirely random, but these seem to have the best drop rate for keys based on my testing. You can only hold one Opulent Key at a time, so make sure to use it right away.

How to Use Opulent Keys

Once you obtain an Opulent Key, go to your inventory and highlight it with your cursor. You will see a line of text that offers a clue as to where the corresponding chest is located. These chests can only be in the Pleasure Gardens or Royal Pools — the clue will tell you which of the two rooms it’s in. You will then need to use the small clue to determine where that chest is hidden.

For example, my last key stated that my chest was by “Fallen greatness” in the Pleasure Gardens. This ended up being the chest by the giant decapitated head of Calus on the right side of the room. There are only a few chests in each room, most of which are easy to locate based on the clues offered. Opening one up will earn you a piece of seasonal gear like any of the new Opulent or Haunted weapons.
