Destiny 2 Season of the Haunted is here, and it’s the spookiest addition yet. With the return of Emperor Calus’ mighty Leviathan, players are tasked with venturing into this massive ship to deduce what has happened to this corrupted vessel. Along with the new Nightmare Containment activity, players will be able to earn new weapons, armor, and cosmetics for your Guardian. The Leviathan is also a brand new patrol zone, allowing players to freely explore this haunted ship to their heart’s content. Did I also mention there’s a new dungeon dropping this Friday? Yeah, there’s a lot to do in Season 17.
Unsurprisingly, a new season means there’s a new seasonal currency to grind for. This time it’s Vestiges of Dread, which is used in opening the chest at the end of the Containment seasonal activity in the Leviathan. Given this is a very important resource during this season, here’s how to get and farm for Vestiges of Dread.
How to Get Vestiges of Dread
Vestiges of Dread are earned by completing playlist activities (Crucible, Vanguard Ops, Gambit), opening chests, completing Patrols on the Derelict Leviathan, killing Nightmares, and defeating enemies. The biggest payout comes from playlist activities, which reward 240 Vestiges of Dread. Patrols will give you 40 Vestiges of Dread; opening a chest gives between 40 to 50, depending on the type of chest opened in the Castellum.
While it may seem like the best way to earn a lot of Vestiges of Dread is the playlist activities, you can rack up way more by just running around the Castellum. By doing Patrols and opening world chests, it’s easy to amass a ton of this new material. Since these Patrols are fairly quick, it’s relatively simple to burn through 3 to 4 Patrols in just a few minutes. You should also throw on any of the cache mods on your Ghost, as these will help you locate hidden chests throughout the Castellum.
Once you arrive in the Castellum, I recommend going to the Royal Pools, which is down the long hallway on the left when you first arrive. Inside the Royal Pools, you will find a ton of Nightmares, Patrols, and some chests scattered throughout this section of the Leviathan. During my testing, I was able to earn several hundred Vestiges of Dread by opening up the hidden chests, killing the roaming Nightmares, and completing kill-focused Patrols. Plus, you’ll probably complete a few extra triumphs like slaying all the Nightmares in a specific area.
Also, make sure to wear any of the seasonal armor as you’ll get a buff called Visages of the Reaper, which increases your Vestiges of Dread gain by 5% per armor piece. Wearing this gear in combination with the method above can net you a ton of this material in a short time. Additionally, you’ll want to unlock nodes in the “Reaping” category in the Crown of Sorrow upgrade menu. These unlock new methods for obtaining this material and increase the amount you can hold. While you won’t need some of these upgrades right away, it’s definitely worth picking one or two a week in this column.
