With Destiny 2 Shadowkeep now out, soon focus will shift to the return of Iron Banner. As mentioned in this week’s TWAB, Bungie is changing how Iron Banner works in respect to earning the armor sets. And all focus is on that armor as the developers have not refreshed the weapons from last season. Our Season of the Undying Iron Banner guide has all of the quest steps you’ll need to grab the armor sets for yourself.
Thanks as always to light.gg for being a great source of data.
Iron Banner Changes
Iron Banner starts on October 15 and there are some changes in store.
- You still earn tokens while playing Iron Banner, but you can’t turn them in until you complete this quest line.
- The quest is character based and rewards Iron Banner weapons or armor with each step’s completion.
- Completion is tracked during the entire Season of the Undying. If you don’t complete it during this Iron Banner running, you can finish it next time.
- Until the quest is completed, Iron Banner rewards can only be obtained through match drops and bounties.
- These will only be weapons until the quest has been completed.
- There are only four bounties available per Iron Banner instead of seven.
- These give out pinnacle rewards (up to 960) instead of powerful rewards (up to 950).

Iron Banner Quest Steps
It’s worth noting that the following Iron Banner objectives are retroactive. For example, if you capture ten zones during Step 1, you’ll already have ten zones captured when you start Step 2.
Step 1: Spectacle – Capture Zones, Defeat Opponents, Super Final Blows
The first step is relatively easy and should be completed in one or two games.
- Zones Captured: 10
- Opponents Defeated: 30
- Super Final Blows: 3
At any time during Season 8, complete matches, defeat opponents, capture zones, and land Super final blows in the Iron Banner.
“Weapons jam. Bullets and cells deplete. Your body will fail. Root your reliance in the Light. Shine, and illuminate a path for those who follow.” —Lord Saladin
Step 2: Intent – Complete Matches, Kills with Pulse Rifles
By this point you very well may have already played six matches, if you have, just get the Pulse Rifle Final Blows.
- Zones Captured: 20
- Matches Completed: 6
- Pulse Rifle Final Blows: 25
Land Pulse Rifle final blows in the Iron Banner. At any time during Season 8, complete matches, defeat opponents, capture zones, and land Super final blows to earn progress.
“You’re trying to down an immortal. Don’t go about it softly. Mean it. Let them feel your intent.” —Lord Saladin
Step 3: Timing – Defeat Opponents, Fusion Rifle Final Blows
Thankfully there are no match requirements on this step. Depending on your playstyle either the kills or the zone captures will take the longest. Just keep chugging away and you’ll complete it in time. Remember that Linear Fusion Rifles also count for Fusion Rifle kills! That means you can use the Arbalest and Power Weapons, as well.
- Zones Captured: 30
- Opponents Defeated: 100
- Fusion Rifle Final Blows: 20
Land Fusion Rifle final blows in the Iron Banner. At any time during Season 8, complete matches, defeat opponents, capture zones, and land Super final blows to earn progress.
“Teach them to fear the roar of your instruments. Teach them as many times as it takes.” —Lord Saladin
Step 4: Execution – Capture Zones, Land Final Blows
The zones captured will almost certainly be the hardest part of this quest step. Focus on those while you try to move on from this. On the bright side, SMGs are damn good at the moment. On the downside, that means a lot of people are going to be using Recluse on you…
- Zones Captured: 40
- Super Final Blows: 15
- SMG Final Blows: 15
Land Submachine Gun final blows in the Iron Banner. At any time during Season 8, complete matches, defeat opponents, capture zones, and land Super final blows to earn progress.
“Your prey is off balance. Run them down. Be fearless, hungry, like wolves.” —Lord Saladin
Step 5: Conviction – Capture Zones, Complete Matches
Grenade launcher final blows shouldn’t be too hard, as long as you try to get the heavy ammo drop a handful of times. The Fighting Lion might also help.
- Zones Captured: 50
- Matches Completed: 15
- Submachine Gun Final Blows: 10 (NOTE: This is incorrectly displayed as Grenade Launchers in the game)
Land Grenade Launcher final blows in the Iron Banner. At any time during Season 8, complete matches, defeat opponents, capture zones, and land Super final blows to earn progress.
“In the Dark Age, bands of marauders fashioned crude pipe mortars to bring down Risen warriors, but no ordnance could dim our Light.” —Lord Saladin
Step 6: Forgeborne – Return to Lord Saladin
And you’re done! Head back to Saladin to end the quest.
Return to Lord Saladin.
“Stand. Shake the dust from your bones. Stand over your felled foe. Feel the ache in your stride. Smell the iron in your blood, and smile.” —Lord Saladin
At this point you can start earning Season of the Undying Iron Banner armor sets. Now you can get them from bounties, random drops at the end of each match, and through Lord Saladin engrams! Keep in mind that you need to complete the quest on each character if you want one set for each class. Best of luck!
