Yes, Animal Crossing: New Horizons can get even better. How, you ask? Four words: Danny DeVito trash shrine.
The secret to getting the most creative, hilarious and downright bonkers Animal Crossing wallpapers, artworks and outfits in your game is in custom designs — and rather than have to sketch your own, you can scan those that helpful designers have already created straight into your game using QR codes.
To set up your game to use them you’ll need to have a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription, and download the Nintendo Switch mobile app. Launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons on your Switch, and on the title screen, open Settings (-). Select “NookLink Settings” and then select “Connect to NookLink.”
Then, open your Nintendo Switch Online app, select Animal Crossing New Horizons (also known as NookLink) and then select “Designs.” From here, you can follow the instructions on screen to scan a QR code that will then be accessible in-game.
Once you’ve scanned a code, in the game, open ‘Custom Designs’ in your Nook Phone and press (+) to actually download the design and save it in one of your Custom Designs slots.
When it’s downloaded and saved, then it’s time to have fun! You can Wear it (Top, Face Paint), Display it (Mannequin, Painting, Canvas, Hanger, Tile Mat), or Spread in Room (Wall, Floor).
Whether you want to honour your favourite band, dress as a Super Saiyan or bring a little Hogwarts magic to your island, these custom QR code designs will make your island the envy of all your friends…
1. Harry Potter Cosplay
There are loads of Harry Potter-themed designs out there ready to bring some witchcraft and wizardry to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. And what better way to start bringing the magic than by repping your Sorting Hat-approved uniform? Options for true Gryffindors, Slytherins, Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs are all ready to scan and wear.

2. Even More Wizard Cosplay
Swap chasing tarantulas for chasing the Golden Snitch with a Quidditch uniform. You can even cosplay your vaulting pole as a broomstick. Wingardium Leviosa!

3. Breath of the Wild Link
While you patiently wait for a Breath of the Wild sequel, go for the next best thing and bring Link’s look onto your Animal Crossing island. Bonus points if you have a horse villager.

4. Arctic Monkeys Gear
Show your appreciation for the “Do I Wanna Know?” indie rock superstars by wearing this replica of their official band merch, featuring their classic logo. I always wondered how to visit Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino… turns out I can just make it in Animal Crossing.

5. Fallout’s Vault Dweller Suit
If your island’s looking more Deserted Wasteland than Tropical Paradise, perhaps you should get yourself one of these. Hey, who has time for gardening anyway?

6. Princess Peach’s Dress
Sure, the Able Sisters store does sell “Princess Dresses” in pink which are pretty similar — but this is a replica of Peach’s iconic dress, straight out of the Mushroom Kingdom. Plus, using a custom design rather than buying an outfit from them is, y’know, free. Keep them in business, though, by looking out for “Princess Hair” to complete the look and top your villager off with a Peach-appropriate tiara.

7. Mario-Themed Flooring
Place these designs on the ground for cool Super Mario Bros. themed paths around your island. Sadly, nothing happens when you whack the Question Mark Block with your net. I’ve tried.

8. Goku’s Gear (and Muscles)
For some reason, everyone’s got an islander who loves working out and will not stop telling you about it. Show them the meaning of power by flying over to their house and blowing their tiny mind with some proper Super Saiyan muscles.

9. Starfleet Uniform
Who knew Dodo Airlines had acquired the Starship Enterprise? Join Starfleet with this Star Trek: The Next Generation uniform. To go full Picard, just delete your hair. Easiest cosplay ever.

10. A Shrine to Frank Reynolds
Now, I promised you a Danny Devito Trash Shrine — and I swear on rum ham I will give you a Danny Devito Trash Shrine. The key to creating one like this though, unlocks even more fun to be had with Animal Crossing’s custom design creator. To make this — or anything, at all — you don’t need to rely on someone else’s pre-made QR code, because you can make your own! All you have to do is head to acpatterns.com/editor — a handy browser-based tool that will convert any picture you like into an Animal Crossing custom design. Using the editor tool, hit “Convert,” select the image file you want to use in-game (the clearer and simpler, the better) and then “Generate QR Code,” and you’ll have a QR code you can scan in the same way as all of the above pre-made ones.
