The secret to getting the most creative, hilarious and downright bonkers Animal Crossing wallpapers, artworks and outfits in your game is in custom designs — and rather than have to sketch your own, you can scan those that helpful designers have already created straight into your game using QR codes.
To set up your game to use them you’ll need to have a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription, and download the Nintendo Switch mobile app. Launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons on your Switch, and on the title screen, open Settings (-). Select “NookLink Settings” and then select “Connect to NookLink.”
Then, open your Nintendo Switch Online app, select Animal Crossing New Horizons (also known as NookLink) and then select “Designs.” From here, you can follow the instructions on screen to scan a QR code that will then be accessible in-game.
Once you’ve scanned a code, in the game, open ‘Custom Designs’ in your Nook Phone and press (+) to actually download the design and save it in one of your Custom Designs slots.
When it’s downloaded and saved, then it’s time to have fun! You can Wear it (Top, Face Paint), Display it (Mannequin, Painting, Canvas, Hanger, Tile Mat), or Spread in Room (Wall, Floor).
Whether you want to honour your favourite band, dress as a Super Saiyan or bring a little Hogwarts magic to your island, these custom QR code designs will make your island the envy of all your friends…

The key to creating one like this though, unlocks even more fun to be had with Animal Crossing’s custom design creator. To make this — or anything, at all — you don’t need to rely on someone else’s pre-made QR code, because you can make your own! All you have to do is head to acpatterns.com/editor — a handy browser-based tool that will convert any picture you like into an Animal Crossing custom design. Using the editor tool, hit “Convert,” select the image file you want to use in-game (the clearer and simpler, the better) and then “Generate QR Code,” and you’ll have a QR code you can scan in the same way as all of the above pre-made ones.
