There are a lot of gay characters in Destiny 2. Like, a lot. While romantic relationships haven’t figured much into the game historically, that’s begun to change as Bungie tries to balance cosmic stakes with interpersonal storytelling. We’re starting to see more relationships between characters in cutscenes and dialogue, and many of those relationships happen to be same-sex ones. Here are all of the gay and bi characters that I’m aware of in Destiny 2.
Osiris & Saint-14 — Duh. One of the few romantic relationships of any kind that’s been made explicit in-game, as opposed to in lore. Get well soon, Osiris.
Mara Sov — Was in a long-term relationship with Sjur Eido, the first Queen’s Wrath (a job now held by Petra Venj). Possibly bisexual, though that lore piece was pretty contentious and I imagine that if it ever comes up again, Bungie might just say that no, Shaxx really did just read The Tempest from memory, no funny business.
Sjur Eido — See above! Also, there’s a great bit about Sjur and Mara from the Telic II lore: “Sjur,” Mara said, falling to her knees, clutching her beloved’s face between shaking hands, “Sjur, on the day you worship me, you cannot love me anymore, for to worship is to yield all power, and I cannot love what has no power over me.”
Devrim Kay — Loves his husband Marc! There’s a great vignette about the two of them having Suraya Hawthorne over to dinner in the lore for the new Rain of Fire Exotic.
Wei Ning & Eriana-3 — Two Guardians in love, Wei Ning died on the moon and Eriana-3 became obsessed with getting revenge against Crota, the Son of Oryx and Hive Prince who killed her. It didn’t go great, but both Guardians live on through Exotics tied to their stories (Eriana’s Vow and Fighting Lion).
Eramis, Kell of Darkness — Yes, the Eliksni big bad of the Beyond Light expansion had a wife. Her name? Athrys, which you might recognize from the Athrys’s Embrace Hunter Exotic. According to Variks, Athrys was “kind, wise, and clever.” Eramis sent her and their children to another star before the events of Beyond Light. Did they adopt, or can Eliksni of the same sex have kids somehow? God I hope Eramis breaks out of Stasis jail soon.
Ana Bray & Camrin Dumizi — In the comic that served as a prequel to the Warmind expansion, Ana teams up with an agent of the civilian scientific organization called the Owl Sector. Her name is Camrin Dumizi, and she helps Ana in her search for Rasputin. Unfortunately, Camrin is a normal human and not a Light-empowered Guardian and is critically injured when she dives in front of a Vex attack to stop it from destroying a terminal that would help Ana find the information she was looking for. Ana put Camrin into stasis in a medical bunker rather than let her die, so it’s uncertain whether she’ll ever make a return.
Maya Sundaresh & Chioma Esi — Two researchers who lived during the Golden Age and studied the Vex as a part of the Ishtar Collective. Cayde-6 was Maya’s bodyguard back then, and was deeply in love with her. Maya went on to be one of the founders of Future War Cult, and Chioma went on to work out on one of the moons of Saturn. Their story can mostly be found in Destiny 1‘s Grimoire cards, though there are bits and pieces scattered around Destiny 2 as well.
Suraya Hawthorne — The oft-forgotten Lightless ranger doesn’t have a whole lot of impact on Destiny 2‘s world or narrative right now, which is a shame — she’s an interesting character with a lot of potential. She’s also presumably interested in women — a few Dawnings back, the Glad Tidings ship included some lore about an 85-year-old woman trying to set her up with someone (her daughter? Granddaughter?) named Farrah.
Uldren Sov — He was extremely close to Jolyon Till, one of Queen Mara’s Crows. It’s unclear what kind of relationship they had, but things kind of fell apart after they made an expedition to the Black Garden together. Jolyon’s aware of Crow’s existence, but last we heard in Season of the Lost had been told not to make contact with him.
Did I miss any? Let me know in the comments. Also, I think Drifter is probably down for whatever.
