Destiny 2 Chalice of Opulence Guide — Runes, Rewards, Menagerie

Destiny 2 Season of Opulence brings a whole new way to “grow fat from strength,” as the great Emperor Calus would say. It’s time to return to his Leviathan ship, raid his Menagerie, and fill up the brand new Chalice of Opulence to earn the season’s new weapons. It’s time, dear readers, for our Chalice of Opulence guide to Destiny 2!

“Calus would see you grow fat from strength,” Bungie said in a blog post about the Chalice of Opulence. “During Season of Opulence, he will be granting players the Chalice of Opulence, which serves as players’ gateway to treasure. Players who emerge victorious in the Menagerie will use the Chalice to serve up an offering of runes in exchange for the weapons and gear they choose from the selection of items available. The treasure you find will be limited at first, but over time you’ll be able to upgrade the Chalice to acquire more plentiful and powerful rewards.”

But what does that mean, exactly? It certainly paints a pretty picture, but we’re here for the nitty gritty facts. Thankfully, the developer has us covered. Here’s how Bungie says the Chalice of Opulence actually works in Destiny 2.

  • Earn runes to slot on your Chalice through the following:
      • Completing weekly bounties
      • Opening up the weekly chests on the new Nessus Barge
      • Using a consumable that will reward you a rune after a strike, Crucible, or Gambit completion
          • The same consumable will also give other players in your fireteam a chance to earn an additional rune
  • Slot the runes into your Chalice before you enter the Menagerie
  • Play the Menagerie in Destiny 2 to earn your rewards
  • Completing the Menagerie will award you the gear you chose with your rune setup
      • Each rune affects what you receive and some of its properties, depending on how you slot them

There are going to be a lot of different combinations of runes to create specific weapons with specific perks, but Bungie offered one “freebie” so far. For a “Beloved” Sniper Rifle with Handling as its Masterwork trait, you would use a Rune of Jubilation, any red rune, and any purple rune.

Note that you can purchase two different buffs from Werner 99-40:

  • Runefinder: Increases the chances of finding Chalice runes in strikes, Crucible matches, and Gambit matches. Allied Guardians who also have the buff active increase everyone’s odds of earning runes.
  • Wealth of the Emperor: Significantly increases the chance of earning Imperials from strikes, Gambit, and the Crucible. Greatly increases the chance of earning Imperials in the Menagerie. Effect lasts until Imperials are earned.

That’s just one example of many, many combinations. Check back here for combinations of runes as they become available.

How to Upgrade the Chalice of Opulence

Destiny 2 Season of Opulence will offer a slew of new Triumphs and bounties to complete. These will, in turn, reward a new currency called “Imperials.” You can use Imperials to upgrade the Chalice and further acquire different perks with different kinds of effects — “from giving you more powerful rewards per week to allowing you to choose the specific gun and Masterwork stat you get from the Menagerie!”

You can also earn Imperials by completing weekly bounties, certain Triumphs, using special consumables, and through Chalice upgrades that allow you to earn Imperials from playlist activities. You can also get them from the chests on the Nessus Barge. These chests reset weekly.

The gameplay loop for the Chalice is to play the Menagerie activity, which is also new for Season of Opulence. Head to the Leviathan and into the Menagerie to fight enemies and complete objectives, and eventually the Chalice will grow in power. What’s coolest is that you can choose which upgrades you unlock first!

Chalice of Opulence Upgrades

You can unlock various upgrades for the Chalice of Opulence which help you earn better and more frequent rewards. In total it’ll cost 36,000 Imperials to fully upgrade your Chalice. Thanks to Charlemagne for rounding these up.
