The answer to the question on every Final Fantasy XIV player’s lips has sadly not arrived, as the game's director and producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida didn’t confirm a release date for Dawntrail at the Tokyo Fan Fest. However, in a teasing statement Yoshi-P did confirm that the game will definitely release in the Summer, and no later.
Talking about the release date during the FFXIV Tokyo Fan Fest Keynote Presentation, Yoshida told fans that Dawntrail’s release couldn’t be given a solid date. He explained that this was due to uncertainty in their own calendar, and his desire to never have to delay the release of a FFXIV expansion again, as was the case with Endwalker.
To this effect, Yoshi-P was tight-lipped on the release date of Dawntrail, but wanted to make one thing certain: the expansion will definitely release in Summer 2024. And that doesn’t mean October, or later. It means Summer (Which traditionally means June until September by most measures).
This assurance is likely due to the fact that Summer games have had a tendency to slip into that later time frame, and Square Enix isn’t immune to it. In fact, perhaps Yoshi-P was making light of the fact Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was originally reportedly slated for a Summer 2023 release, but slipped into January 2024 window. Or that Endwalker was originally predicted to release in Summer 2021, before moving to a release date later in the year, before being delayed by two further weeks.
Whatever the case, Yoshi-P, Square Enix, and the whole Final Fantasy XIV team aren’t taking any chances, and FFXIV: Dawntrail will be out by Summer 2024. Yoshida also confirmed that they had an internal timeline which they were working to, and would likely reveal the specific release date later in the year, possible at an upcoming Live Letter.
