In an interview with Shuhei Yoshida from Sony Interactive Entertainment, Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida said that he and the Creative Business Unit III team would prefer to focus on the MMO instead of developing more games or content related to FFXVI.
The interview, which was conducted in Japanese but translated to English by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences YouTube channel, focused on Yoshi-P's career, the development of FFXVI, and what challenges and issues they ran into while creating the game, among other topics. But, towards the end of the interview, Yoshida asked Yoshi-P if he was considering adding onto the story of FFXVI, such as creating new games in the universe in addition to the DLC currently being developed.
"People often make these requests," Yoshi-P started. "There are a lot of people who love XVI, and they've been telling us they want more of it to play, so we are developing DLC right now. But for us, Creative Business Unit III, we really want to further develop XIV and perhaps put the experience we had cultivated while making XVI to use on a different game, too."
Despite working on two projects at once, Yoshi-P kept regular updates coming for FFXIV's Endwalker while developing FFXVI. But, now wouldn't be a great time for the director and producer of the MMO to have his attention split, considering the game is about to release a new expansion, Dawntrail, in the summer.
While many FFXIV fans also played and loved FFXVI, those who are invested in the MMO would most likely prefer that he have all of his attention set on Dawntrail and the content that comes immediately after. While FFXVI has some DLC coming, it doesn't sound like there are any plans for a sequel beyond what the DLC will offer.
Yoshida asked if Yoshi-P was meant to direct FFXVII, which earned a curious smile from the producer, and a vague response that nothing has been decided yet. For now, fans of the Final Fantasy series will have a plethora of old games to return to, and some new FFXVI DLC coming soon.
