One of the hallmarks of the Pokemon franchise is the many different elemental and thematic types of Pokemon. When Pokemon Red and Blue first released back in 1996, there were only 15 Pokemon types, with the list growing only twice with the addition of the Dark and Steel type in Pokemon Gold and Silver in 1999 and the addition of the latest new typing, Fairy, in Pokemon X and Y in 2013.
With our handy Pokemon Type Guides, we’re taking a look at each of the 18 types to help you become the best Pokemon Trainer you can be. Today we’re going to cover everything you might need to know about Fairy-type Pokemon.
Across the series there are now eighteen standard Pokemon types, with Pokemon either being mono-type (Charmander is a Fire-type Pokemon) or dual-type (Charmander’s final evolution, Charizard, is a dual-type Fire/Flying Pokemon).
Type-effectiveness of Fairy-type Pokemon
Introduced in Pokemon X and Y back in 2013, the Fairy-type was the first new Pokemon type in almost 15 years. Though they have largely been thought of as nothing more than an answer to the power of Dragon-type Pokemon, Fairy-types are actually supereffective against three other types: Dark, Dragon, and Fighting. Fairy-type Pokemon have a few weaknesses too, with both Steel- and Poison-type attacks being supereffective against them. The complete list of the Fairy-type’s type interactions in battle can be seen below, both when attacking and defending.
Super Effective (2x) | Not Very Effective (0.5x) | No Effect (0x) | |
---|---|---|---|
Attacking (Dealing Damage) | Dark Dragon Fighting | Fire Poison Steel | |
Defending (Taking Damage) | Poison Steel | Bug Dark Fighting | Dragon |
How many Fairy-type Pokemon are there?
Across the series, there are 67 Fairy-type Pokemon, not counting Mega Evolutions, the Dynamax and Gigantamax phenomenon, or any other form changes that may affect a Pokemon’s type. 21 of those 67 Pokemon are mono-type Pokemon, while 46 of them are dual-type Pokemon.

Who are Pokemon’s Fairy-type specialists?
The Pokemon franchise is filled to the brim with Pokemon type specialists, Pokemon Trainers who specialize in one type of Pokemon. These trainers are often Gym Leaders, members of a region’s Elite Four, or other powerful trainers to be found during your gameplay. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and its expansion The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero are home to two prominent Fairy-type specialists.
- Ortega is the leader of Team Star’s Ruchbah Squad, located in Paldea’s North Province, Area 3. Haughty and condescending to those he deems weaker than him, Ortega doesn’t have many friends outside of Team Star. Ortega’s ace Pokemon is Daschbun. When defeated, Ortega rewards the player with TM079 - Dazzling Gleam.
- Lacey is a member of the Blueberry League Elite Four, and is located in the Coastal Plaza of Blueberry Academy’s Terarium. She is the daughter of Unova’s Ground-type Gym Leader Clay. Despite being a Fairy-type specialist, her ace Pokemon is an Excadrill, like her father, which she will Terastalize into a Fairy-type when sending it out in battle. When defeated, Lacey will reward the player with TM227 - Alluring Voice.
Other Fairy-type specialists in the Pokemon franchise over the years include:
- Opal and her eventual protegé Bede, both of whom are the Gym Leader of the Ballonlea Gym at different points in Pokemon Sword and Shield
- Lillie, one of the player’s friends and rivals in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
- Mina, the Trial Captain of Seafolk Village in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
- Mina can also be found and fought in Vermillion City once per day in Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!
- Valerie, the franchise’s first Fairy-type specialist and the Gym Leader of the Laverre City Gym in Pokemon X and Y.
