How to Get Island Crystal Formations in FFXIV's Island Sanctuary

Final Fantasy has always been about crystals.

Island Sanctuaries received many new additions in Final Fantasy XIV's Patch 6.5, bringing new resources to collect and unique rewards to earn. To fill out the now-expanded Sanctuary Gathering Log and have the proper materials for newly added handicrafts, you'll need to gather Island Crystal Formations.

Historically, updates to Island Sanctuary immediately make use of any new gatherable resources added. The trend continues with Island Crystal Formations, as you'll need them at Rank 17 to upgrade your Cozy Cabin and unlock new appearances for the central hub, paths, stairs, and floor.

How to unlock Island Crystal Formations

The ability to gather Island Crystal Formations won't be immediately available when working on your Island Sanctuary in Patch 6.5, as you'll first need to unlock the new section in the Mountain Hollow area and craft the required tool. The Islekeep's Chisel is a new tool unlocked at Rank 17 with all new animations required to harvest the crystals beneath the mountain, and at the time of writing, it doesn't seem to harvest any additional resources from other nodes. The Islekeep's Chisel requires:

  • Three Island Coal
  • Three Island Durium Sand
  • Four Island Gold Ore
  • Three Island Hawk's Eye Sand

With the new area inside Mountain Hollow unlocked and Islekeep's Chisel in hand, you can now gather Island Crystal Formations from the nodes in addition to the Island Hawk's Eye Sand they provided before. The Island Crystal Formations are not only required for upgrading the Cozy Cabin but are also an ingredient for new Island Handicrafts added to the workshop in Patch 6.5. If you plan to keep your income of Seafarer's Cowries steady, you'll need to maintain a healthy supply.
