Square Enix Acknowledges Hilarious Zero Cutscene Bug in FFXIV

Square Enix steps in to stop Zero from styling on Golbez.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker’s post-expansion story content wrapped up in Patch 6.5, with the Warrior of Light and Scions facing off against the demonic Golbez for the final time. But for some players, an ill-timed animation bug ruined one of the most dramatic moments of the Main Story Quest (MSQ). Be warned, though: There are 6.5 MSQ spoilers ahead.

At the 6.5 MSQ climax, during the quest “Down in the Dark,” Zero and the Scions face off against Golbez and a revived quartet of Archfiends in a dramatic battle to buy time for the Warrior of Light. But as Zero attempts to power up to face Golbez, some players’ game bugged, and instead of standing stoically, readying her attack, Zero instead began squatting in place. Amusing, but very distracting.

Some players also reported Zero darting across the screen prior to this, in a series of moments that would take even the most dedicated players out of the drama of the story.

Luckily, or perhaps unluckily, the bug is common enough that Square Enix has responded and committed to fixing it. In a blog post on Oct. 10, the company stated that, “We had asked for reports regarding this issue as it may depend on the environment and have received many reports from our players. We are deeply grateful for your cooperation. Upon investigating with the provided information, we were able to confirm that the issue only occurs in some environments.”

However, the reported complexity of fixing the issue means that it’s going to take some time to solve: “Currently, we are aiming towards a fix in Patch 6.51.”

Until then, players will just have to endure the fearsome energy of Zero’s power squats. While in FFXIV, some bugs gain meme status, such as the legendary “Smooth Rock” of 2020, it’s unlikely “Squatting Zero” will gain similar notoriety, especially as the bug takes away from one of the more emotive moments of the 6.5 MSQ.
