Smash Ultimate is finally within our grasp. It’s been far too long since the series’ last entry, but Super Smash Bros. is back and exclusive to Nintendo’s newest console, the Nintendo Switch. And there’s a lot more this time than just a few new fighters — such as an absolutely massive single-player mode. Smash Ultimate is far and away the most complete package the series has ever seen. And we really mean it when we say “complete.”

Smash Ultimate includes 74 playable characters — and that’s just for launch. Every previous contender is back again, plus a load of new fighters. That doesn’t even include the slew of upcoming DLC characters, assist trophies, Pokemon you can summon, plus much more. There’s so much to keep track of that only the pros could possibly remember everything. So we’ve compiled a guide to every single character in Smash Ultimate!

Yoshi seems like a quite versatile character with a lot of on-brand, egg-related moves. He can chew up and spit out enemies like Kirby, but trades the ability to steal powers for more consistent abilities. Also like Kirby, Yoshi has quite a lot of air recovery. That might make him a good choice for new players that aren’t as used to saving themselves from falling off the stage in Smash Ultimate.

According to the official Nintendo description of Yoshi…

Yoshi is all about egg-related moves, like throwing eggs, swallowing opponents and turning them into eggs, or turning into an egg and charging toward an opponent. With a high jump, recovery is a piece of cake for Yoshi! And for his Final Smash, a Yoshi army stampedes through the stage.

Moves

Egg Lay (B) – Grabs the opponent with a tongue attack, swallows them, and traps them in an egg.

Egg Roll (Side + B) – Turns into an egg and rolls into enemies. Can jump once while in the egg.

Smash Ultimate Yoshi Moves

Egg Throw (Up + B) – Lobs an egg. Can set the angle of the throw with directional inputs.

Yoshi Bomb (Down + B) – Jumps up quickly and slams into the ground, shooting stars out left and right.

Stampede! (Final Smash) – Yoshi knocks down opponents with a tackle. Then, Yoshis of various colors appear and send the opponent flying! The first tackle can affect up to three opponents, but be sure not to KO yourself if you miss everyone.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

Yoshi’s odd toolkit leads to some truly incredible plays and highlights. His egg toss and powerful normals let him keep opponents guessing, while moves like his airborne down-A (the flutter kick) can do some real damage. Especially among the base fighters, Yoshi is unique and tricky to handle.

Weaknesses

That also means you’ll spend a lot of time getting a handle on what exactly Yoshi does. His recovery move doesn’t have as much “lift” as others so you have to rely on his double-jump. Yoshi’s Ultimate iteration might be one of his best yet, but be ready to put some time in.

Changes

Yoshi took some time to work on his quads during the off season. He now dashes faster.

The Eggs that Yoshi throws now bounce before breaking, making it easier to hit opponents with them.

Yoshi’s Yoshi Bomb, also known as Ground Pound, can now go through soft platforms.

Stampede! Yoshi has an all-new Final Smash. If he lands the initial headbutt an entire gaggle, a bevy, a flock of Yoshi will crush opponents underneath their cute little feet.

Outfits

Nearly all of Yoshi’s outfits are palette swaps. The lone exception is one where he looks fuzzy like in Yoshi’s Crafted World.
