How to Get the Gabriel α Mount in FFXIV

Activate this airborne mecha for your WoL!

Final Fantasy XIV, like many entries in the Final Fantasy series, doesn’t shy away from sci-fi elements in its game, and the Gabriel α mount is great example of that. A transforming mech with gatling machine guns that would perhaps look more at home in an Armored Core game than a Final Fantasy, the Gabriel α mount is one of the most unique mounts in the MMO.

An item linked to The Bozjan Southern Front, Shadowbringers' relic weapon grind, this exclusive item is one of the most sought after parts of the content (after the weapons of course). Here’s how to get it for yourself.

How to unlock the Gabriel α Mount in FFXIV

The Gabriel α is unlocked after activating the Gabriel α Identification Key, which itself is a reward from Southern Front Lockboxes. Southern Front Lockboxes give a random prize when opened, and the Gabriel α is a rare drop from them.

There isn't really a good way to work out the chances of a drop from treasure chests and lockboxes in FFXIV. However, in the case of the Southern Front Lockbox, one Reddit user opened 2,473 lockboxes, which gives a good idea of the drop rates. Given there were 12 keys that dropped from 2,473 boxes, it means there’s about a one in 200 chance to get the Gabriel α Identification Key.

How to get Southern Front Lockboxes

There are two ways to obtain Southern Front Lockboxes. The easiest way is to complete FATEs in the Bozjan Southern Front area. All FATEs in the area have a chance to drop a Lockbox upon completion, with the chance being higher if you complete the FATE on a higher completion level.

Alternatively, you can trade Field Notes which you receive in the Bozjan Southern Front with the Resistance Historian in Zadnor (X: 34.6, Y: 34.9) to receive between one and five lockboxes.
