Copperbell Mines FFXIV Dungeon Guide: Walkthrough and Gear

There are giants hiding in the darkness. Some explosives might help matters.

Grab yourself a few ounces of firesand and prepare to do some mining in the abandoned mines sitting on the edges of Ul’dah. Once thought bare, now they teem with life, but not the expected kind. Instead, the hecatonchires have been freed and the giants want revenge on those that trapped them long ago. They’ll settle for the Warrior of Light, however.

Salutations! You’ve triumphed over Sastasha and The Tam-Tara Deepcroft, so welcome to your next dungeoneering challenge in Final Fantasy XIV. This is a level 17 duty unlocked as part of the main scenario quest “Into a Copper Hell.” Copperbell Mines is one of the dungeons that was slightly reworked with Patch 6.1, so that’s the iteration we’re highlighting today.

First Mob Pulls – Shaft B4

The map hasn’t changed from the previous iteration. It’s largely a straight path, with one or two branches to additional rooms that usually have a few mobs and treasure chests. If you don’t need the loot — which is listed below — you should skip these divergences.

The first group you’ll encounter consists of two Copperbell Coblyns and one Spriggan Copper Copper. The only thing of note with this first pack is that the Spriggans eventually cast Haste on themselves, causing them to attack faster. You’ll likely kill them before that’s a major problem.

One of the enemies will drop a Tiny Key, which you’ll use on the nearby Sealed Blasting Door. Within the next room, you’ll find a Lift Lever. Interact with it to descend into the mine itself. There’s a lot of interaction in this dungeon.

Following the main path to the east, you’ll run into another Copperbell Coblyn and Spriggan Copper Copper. Near the next Copperbell Coblyn, a Hecatoncheir Stonehauler will burst out of the wall. This larger enemy has an occasional Grand Slam attack that will hit your tank decently hard, so be prepared. After this, you’ll run into a few packs of standard enemies with the addition of the Thunder-casting Lightning Sprites.

You’ll eventually come to a Blasting Device, though this won’t activate until you put twelve ounces of Firesand in the nearby Powder Chamber. You’ll find one bag with six ounces of Firesand to the east and another to the north. Once you’ve picked up both, place them in the Powder Chamber and activate the Blasting Device to blow up the wall.

First Boss: Kottos

Kottos is the first boss of Copperbell Mines and offers a slight preview of the dungeon’s final boss. This fight happens in a circular arena, with no danger zones to worry about.

  • Grand Slam: This is the single-target tankbuster. Tanks, be prepared to use your cooldowns.
  • Lumbering Leap: The boss will mark three large circular AoEs on the arena, leaving a small section of safe space. Once the cast ends, Kottos will jump on the marked sections in succession. After that, it’ll automatically use…
  • Colossal Slam: A large cone AoE radiating from the boss. Move out of the way to avoid this.
  • Catapult: Kottos picks a party member at random and begins casting this attack. At the end of the cast, it’ll throw a rock at its target

Once downed, Kottos will drop a Tiny Key and Treasure Coffer. Use the key on the Sealed Blasting Door and then use the Lift Lever to head down to the next level.

Second Mob Pulls – Shaft E1

On this level, you’ll find another Blasting Device and Powder Chamber but no easy bags of Firesand; you need to dispatch the enemies to the east and west to get some. The east group consists of a Blasting Cap and Errant Soul, while the west group contains a Blasting Cap, Errant Soul, and Spriggan Copper Copper. The Blasting Caps have the Firesand you need and will drop it when they die. They’re also the only enemies that will potentially surprise you by casting the circle AoE Self-destruct, which also kills them.

Once you open up the shaft, you’ll be introduced to a small tunnel with a bag of Firesand. Pick that up and make your way to the boss.

FFXIV Ichorous Ire

Second Boss: Ichorous Ire

This is the fight that sees the most changes from its previous iteration to its current form. The previous version was somewhat confusing if you didn’t know the fight; this version is very straightforward.

  • Syrup: Small circle AoEs appear underneath each party member. Move out of the way to avoid the attack.
  • Fluid Spread: A heavy-hitting attack on the tank. Use your cooldowns, tanks.
  • Divide: The boss spits out multiple clones of itself. Eventually, each of these clones cast Burst, exploding in circle AoEs.

Once the boss is downed, a Treasure Coffer and a second bag of Firesand will appear. Use the two bags on the Powder Chamber and then the Blasting Device. You know how this works!

Third Mob Pulls – Shaft E2

Right behind the wall, you’ll immediately run into a group of three mobs, including two Pit Hippocerfs and a Living Fossil. The latter will occasionally use the conal AoE attack Gas Shell, which is the only thing you need to watch out for.

There are two paths forward, but they’re mostly the same. The room has more Errant Souls, Pit Hippocerfs, and Living Fossils. A second Hecatoncheir Stonehauler will appear here as well.

FFXIV Gyges

Third Boss: Gyges the Great

As we noted before, Gyges the Great is essentially a larger version of his fellow hecatoncheires. Along with his size, that means he’ll have some additional attacks. You’ll fight the boss in a circle arena with no hazard zones.

  • Grand Slam: The single-target tankbuster. Tanks, be prepared to use your cooldowns.
  • Colossal Slam: A large cone AoE radiating from the boss. Move out of the way to avoid this.
  • Gigantic Smash: When the boss starts casting this attack, it’ll mark a huge circle AoE underneath itself and then another five circle AoEs around the arena. At the end of the cast, Gyges will slam down underneath itself and then the other AoEs will explode.
  • Gigantic Swing: The boss will mark the entire arena, with a safe zone inside of its hitbox. Hug the boss to avoid this attack.

That’s it. No additional mechanics to worry about and this fight is over. The Warrior of Light vanquishes another ancient evil and maybe picks up the Mining bug.
