In FFXIV, Jet Black Dye is, as its name suggests, an item used to dye clothes a deep black color. One “pot” of Jet Black Dye is consumed when dying a particular item (e.g. a helmet). Thus, multiple pots of Jet Black Dye are needed to color an entire set of armor with the color. It’s typically shown to be a bit darker and clearer than other black dye types, like Soot Black Dye.
It’s worth noting that Jet Black Dye is the paid version of this item. Players must purchase it with real money from the Mog Station online store. It costs $1 USD for one pot or $7.50 USD for a pack of 10 (the same price as all other paid FFXIV dyes).
A free version, called General-purpose Jet Black Dye, can be acquired in-game. The two dye types are functionally identical — providing the exact same color and shade. The only difference is the means of acquisition.
Because of its high degree of popularity, and extreme rarity, General-purpose Black Dye is often sold for an exceptionally high price on the in-game Market Board. Thus Jet Black Dye is also a popular real-money purchase to sidestep the grind and virtual expense.
Other than that it’s… Y’know. Black. It’s black dye. It kinda goes with everything.
