Smash Ultimate Villager Guide – Moves, Outfits, Strengths, Weaknesses

Smash Ultimate offers something a little bit different for every player. Whether you usually like battling to the death over floating platforms, or just enjoy relaxing in a town full of animals, there’s a fighter to represent you. And few characters are more laid back than the nondescript villager from Animal Crossing — who is once again a playable fighter in Nintendo’s smashing battle series.

Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to every single character.

The Villager doesn’t stand out from the pack in the Smash Ultimate roster at first. You don’t usually associate Animal Crossing with intense, 4-8 player battles, after all. And, in fact, most of the fighter’s moves are weaponized agricultural techniques. You chop down trees and bury foes in flower holes. It’s unorthodox, but you might find this fighting style to be awfully effective.

According to the Animal Crossing Villager’s character description from Nintendo…

This fighter attacks using skills from daily life in the village, such as planting, growing, and cutting down trees. They can also use items like nets, slingshots, and turnips. The Villager can also put items or incoming projectiles in a pocket to use later.

Villager Moves

Pocket (B) – Pockets an item or projectile to use later. A second button press takes it back out.

Lloid Rocket (Side + B) – Fires Lloid forward like a rocket. Lloid can be ridden if the button is held.

Balloon Trip (Up + B) – Dons a balloon hat and flies around. Great maneuverability, but the balloons can be popped.

Timber (Down + B) – Plants a seed, waters it, and chops the tree down. Each step has a different effect on foes.

Dream Home (Final Smash) – Tom Nook and his gang rushes in to build a totally affordable and reliable house for you. Then the house explodes, sending nearby opponents flying.

Here’s how Timber works.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

The haunting visage of the Villager is the stuff of nightmares, when played well. They have excellent setplay — chopping trees and launching rockets to frustrate even the most cool, collected player. Villager also got a significant new tool for certain match-ups; if you pocket a projectile with their Down-B, it can be held indefinitely, so any fighter with bespoke, singular projectiles can get shut down.

Weaknesses

Their big weakness is their light weight and slow, punishable moves. Villager can be devastating, but a whiff on a big hit can also spell out a quick end of the round for them. Know your frame data and which moves to throw out when, so you don’t end up eating hits for free.

Outfits

Unsurprisingly, the Smash Ultimate Villager has a plethora of unique clothing options. They do come from the Animal Crossing series, after all, and a lot of the fun in that series is customizing your character (which the Villager represents in Smash Ultimate). Although the character model itself remains fairly basic and “cartoonish.” You can pick between masculine and feminine styles and different outfits. Those dead, dead eyes are basically always the same, however.

The Villager is a fun, if strange, entrant on the Smash Ultimate roster. They can have a big impact if you can master their unusual fighting style. And enemy players are sure to be frustrated by those nonstop gyroids (the Smash Ultimate AI sure loves to spam them, anyway). Hopefully this guide will give you a basic understanding of how to start your new career as this placid gladiator. Enjoy!
