There’s a whole lot going on in Smash Ultimate. The nostalgic platform fighter from Nintendo is chock full of fun in the form of a single-player campaign and endless multiplayer options. But that’s not all. There are also some seriously deep cuts (and fan favorites) joining the fray this time around.
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. Isabelle might just be the mayor’s faithful assistant in Animal Crossing, but she’s come to Smash Ultimate prepared to fight. She shares quite a few moves with the “villager” character from their shared series. However, Isabelle is not an echo fighter. She sports her own unique abilities, in addition to some slightly different attributes. Take a look at them in action with this video!
Isabelle Moves
Pocket (B) – Pockets an item of projectile to use later. Pressing the button again takes it back out.
Fishing Rod (Side + B) – Hooks an opponent and throws them forward. Tilting up or down throws the opponent in that direction.
Balloon Trip (Up + B) – Flies around with balloons. Great maneuverability, but the balloons can be popped.
Lloid Trap (Down + B) – Buries Lloid in the ground. If touched by a foe, it rises up, dealing constant damage, and then explodes.
Dream Town Hall (Final Smash) – Tom Nook and his gang show up to build a Town Hall. The move traps opponents, and then Town Hall explodes, launching those caught in the blast. If no one is caught in the initial attack, nothing happens.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Isabelle is the most adorable fighter on the roster, but also packs a mean wallop. She’s nimble, has a lot of utility in her special moves, and can guard the ledge extremely well with her fishing rod and rockets. Also, you’re not allowed to attack her. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.
Weaknesses
If you are, however, a monster and attack Isabelle, you’ll find she’s pretty lightweight. Many of her moves are telegraphed as well, so wait for a big smash attack whiff to move in. Just be prepared to go immediately to jail after causing Isabelle harm. Again, I don’t make the rules, this is just a PSA: Isabelle is pure good and we are sworn to protect her.
Isabelle Outfits
Isabelle’s alternate costumes aren’t just palette swaps, but they’re pretty close. Besides some different color options, there are slight differences to the pattern on her sweater. You probably won’t notice them in the heat of battle, however.
Of course, Animal Crossing fans may not want to put the usually gentle Isabelle in danger. That’s all the more reason to become as strong as possible with the canine bureaucrat!
