Smash Ultimate welcomes all comers. Just because a character (or multiple characters) hasn’t shown up for a while doesn’t mean they’ve been completely forgotten. That’s clearly the case with Rosalina and Luma. The co-stars of Super Mario Galaxy haven’t taken center stage in a game since the Nintendo Wii. Yet here they are, in all their sparkly glory, to help round out the Smash Ultimate roster.
They’re not nearly alone, either. Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bu07nch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to every single character.

Smash Ultimate classifies Rosalina and Luma as one character on its roster. Although you can control both fighters independently. Luma flies away from Rosalina to attack with its own moves and health bar. If Luma “dies,” however, Rosalina won’t be injured. You simply need to wait a minute for her companion to return. Likewise, Luma can continue to function even if their precious princess is incapacitated.
According to the dual character’s official Nintendo character description…
Luma mimicks Rosalina’s attacks. Luma also increases Rosalina’s reach and can even take a hit for her! If Rosalina gets hit, Luma gets very flustered and flutters both hands.
Rosalina Moves
Luma Shot (B) – Flings Luma forward. A second button press calls Luma back. Can be charged.
Star Bits (Side + B) – Commands Luma to fire three Star Bits forward. Works at any range.
Launch Star (Up + B) – Flies into the air at an angle. The angle can be adjusted with left and right directional input.
Gravitational Pull (Down + B) – Draws items and projectiles safely toward her. While being drawn in, they can damage foes.
Grand Star (Final Smash) – A Grand Star shoots out stars while also pulling in opponents that are hit. In the end, the Grand Star explodes. Rosaline and Luma can freely move around during the Final Smash, giving them a chance to land extra attacks.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
This combo of galactic princess and her sentient body of celestial gas are one of the few “pair” fighters in the game. Having two bodies can be a distinct advantage, increasing Rosalina’s effective range and putting more pressure on opponents. They can also dissuade an offense, letting Rosalina hang back while Luma does the frontline fighting and tanks hits. Controlling the opponent with this dualistic pressure is key to the Rosalina & Luma strategy. It’s what the pair excels at the most.
Weaknesses
Without Luma around, though, Rosalina becomes an easy target. A lightweight with low endurance, Rosalina also isn’t the most stellar fighter on her own. A paired fighter excels when both members are in their element, but remove Luma from the equation and Rosalina can stumble. If you’re having trouble with this character, try to focus down the star before the princess.
Outfits
Sadly, Rosalina is one of those unfortunate characters that doesn’t really get alternate costumes. It’s mostly just color swaps. And poor Luma doesn’t even get to change at all! A couple of her alternates do change the accents on Rosalina’s dress, however. Notably, the star pattern looks particularly striking on her black uniform.
And that’s all for now about Rosalina and Luma! The combo character can certainly be tricky to play. So beginner’s might want to stay away. That said, if you’re dead set on learning the cosmic princess and her starry companion, we hope this guide set you on the right path.
