Smash Ultimate is such a tease. The game — and really the entire Super Smash Bros. series — continues to remind us of all the Nintendo franchise we haven’t seen in far too long. Mother 3, and its lack of an English localization, have become something of a meme in recent year. So it hurts that much more to know that Smash Ultimate might be the last time we see its colorful cast of characters for a long, long time. Although Ness and Lucas are far from the only examples in this year’s hottest crossover game.
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. Lucas isn’t the most famous member of the Mother/Earthbound cast, but he was a real powerhouse in previous Super Smash Bros. games. Although that changes with the whims of Nintendo’s balance patches. He’s once again received some major changes in Smash Ultimate, as well, so it’s time to learn how this character stands among his peers.

Like Ness, Lucas is a young boy who uses PSI powers. Some of their PSI moves share the same names, but since Lucas has different abilities, the moves may work differently. Be sure to try them out! For his Final Smash, he calls down a shower of meteors along with Kumatora and Boney.
Lucas Moves
PK Freeze (B) – Launches a projectile that freezes enemies. The projectile’s path can be controlled.
PK Fire (Side + B) – Fires light that explodes when it hits, erupting into a column of flame that launches enemies.
PK Thunder (Up + B) – Fires a steerable ball of lightning. Sends Lucas flying if he hits himself.
PSI Magnet (Down + B) – Absorbs energy-based projectiles and weak explosions. Activates faster and heals more than Ness’s.
PK Starstorm (Final Smash) – With the help of Kumatora and Boney, Lucas calls down a shower of meteors that damage any foes they hit. The meteors fall faster as time passes. The meteors’ trajectory can be adjusted slightly with left or right input.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Lucas’ PK powers are especially frustrating in Smash Ultimate. He’s faster, and his neutral game is stronger than ever before. PK Freeze received significant buffs, making it a killer setup for a big smash attack. Lucas is a scrappier version of Ness, for people who prefer to go toe-to-toe.
Weaknesses
Unfortunately, the combo game of old Lucas was toned down quite a bit. He struggles getting back onto the stage and in control of the game once he’s been launched. While a solid neutral-game fighter, Lucas struggles a bit in scramble situations. So try to keep your feet planted on the stage.
