Smash Ultimate has no shortage of Pokemon among its ranks. Many of these were relegated to “summons” with the Poke Ball or come with the Pokemon Trainer fighter. A few, however, got their very own spots on the roster. Mewtwo is no different — which is as it should be. The master of psychic manipulation in the Pokemon series is a classic character. Although they’re far from alone this time around.
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. Mewtwo isn’t really a brawler or a straightforward rush character. You need to be clever and careful to get the most out of this legendary “monster.”
According to the creature’s official Nintendo description…
A Legendary Pokémon known for its technical moves. Use Confusion or Disable as a diversion, then land a Shadow Ball! For its Final Smash, Mewtwo transforms into Mega Mewtwo Y and fires a projectile that freezes and launches the opponent!
Mewtwo Moves
Shadow Ball (B) – Fires an energy projectile. Charging it for longer increases its damage and launch power.
Confusion (Side + B) – Uses psychic energy to topple an opponent in front. It can also reflect projectiles.
Teleport (Up + B) – Warps instantly to another location. Directional input determines the destination.
Disable (Down + B) – Makes eye contact with an enemy to stun them. Ineffective when airborne or not facing an opponent.
Psystrike (Final Smash) – Mewtwo Mega Evolves into Mega Mewtwo Y and fires a projectile that freezes and launches every foe it hits. This move travels through landscapes and opponents, making it easy to hit multiple opponents.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Mewtwo is a strange amalgamation of different fighting styles. He has devastating throws, powerful tilt attacks, and a solid projectile. His specials give him options that seem alien compared to other fighters. It’s really hard to ever define Mewtwo, but if you like playing fighters that defy definition, Mewtwo has a lot to offer in most areas of Smash.
Weaknesses
Despite being a large fighter, Mewtwo is surprisingly lightweight and floaty. It takes a while to get used to his moves and some are quite punishable, with big whiffs that leave you open for a good punish. The knowledge barrier for Mewtwo is a little bit higher, if you want to make the most of the genetically engineered super-Pokémon.
Mewtwo Outfits
Mewtwo looks the same as they always do. Outfits swap skin tint and tail color with a special inverted Mewtwo to boot. Just don’t expect much from this one! Despite having the ability to speak (or at least telepathically communicate) Mewtwo is basically nude.
