Smash Ultimate has been a real crowd-pleaser so far, for both longtime series fans and critics alike. The enormous celebration of decades of Nintendo history (and often just Nintendo adjacent games) is getting great reviews. But regardless of how good the game is, there’s still plenty to learn about the massive new release. And much of that isn’t explained in the game itself.
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to every single character.

This character guide focuses on Mr. Game & Watch — the 2D hero (?) from Nintendo’s ancient back catalog. While he might not be super relevant in today’s games, he’s often a fun pick in Smash Ultimate. That’s assuming you can master his unorthodox attack patterns.
According to Mr. Game & Watch’s official Nintendo description…
When using his side special, Judge, this fighter pulls out a hammer and the numbers 1-9 are displayed. If you pull off a 9 attack, it will really knock the opponent back. His Final Smash turns him into an octopus that can pull opponents off the stage!
Mr. Game & Watch Moves
Chef (B) – Flings inedible food from a frying pan. Up to five things can be flung with repeated button presses.
Judge (Side + B) – Swings his hammer. The power changes depending on the number displayed.
Fire (Up + B) – Launches into the air and opens a parachute, allowing him to glide down.
Oil Panic (Down + B) – Collects projectiles in a bucket, or reflects projectiles he cannot collect. Tosses oil when the bucket is full!
Octopus (Final Smash) – Mr. Game & Watch turns into a giant octopus, grabbing anyone he touches and dragging them off-screen. Button inputs control his four tentacles, which stretch and shrink. The octopus can also be moved up and down with the stick.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Of all the characters to get a little buff-up in Ultimate, the retro Mr. Game & Watch is pretty surprising. But he’s back, in all his bacon-flipping, hammer-smashing glory. Game & Watch is a tricky fighter and you can use his lack of obvious attack patterns to really do some serious damage.
Weaknesses
He still has some stubby, short-ranged attacks, though, so closing the gap is an issue for Game & Watch. While his normal attacks are solid, his grabs aren’t anything to write home about, either; you’re mostly playing ol’ G&W for his combo potential and retro style, so stick to your guns.
Game & Watch Outfits
Don’t expect much out of Mr. Game & Watch. He’s two dimensional, so there’s not exactly a lot to change.
