Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Folios Guide - How They Work, How to Respec

A totally new system for Cloud and his weird friends to dig into.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has a number of systems comprising progression, adding tons of complexity to the foundation laid in FF7 Rebirth. Some systems are returning but different, others are brand-new. One of the newbies is Folios, which not unlike Weapon Upgrades isn’t super well-explained in the game. After spending some time ahead of Rebirth’s launch, I thought laying out how this stuff works would be helpful.

What are Folios in FF7 Rebirth?

In a diegetic sense, Folios are these adorable, little notepads each character has. They’re absurdly customized, look impossible to hold comfortably, and contain tons of combat data. In a functional-slash-gameplay sense, Folios are individual skill trees. As you level up your characters and gain Party and Weapon Levels, the content within Folios expand, and you can spend your hard-earned SP to fill them out.

Everything lives in Folios. These are where you’ll find your Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities, which are FF7 Rebirth’s marquee new combat features. You’ll also find additional magical abilities that expand combat options for everyone, passive stat bonuses, and more little extras on top of the really fun stuff.

Can you Respec Folios in FF7 Rebirth?

If you’re concerned about how to curate your character builds, don’t be! You can refund your SP on demand for free. If you have a node you want to refund you can simply hold the Triangle button to open it back up. If there are attached nodes and the one you’re tossing holds that chain together, you’ll refund the whole path all at once. You can then reallocate your SP as you want. So if you pay a whopping 10 SP for an ability you end up disliking, don’t hesitate to dump it and try something else.

You’re first introduced to Folios at a bookstore in Kalm, and it seems like you’ll have to visit said bookstores in order to spend your SP. While you can’t play with Folios from the menu like you can Weapon Upgrades, you can encounter bespoke machines set up alongside the benches and vending machines you run into that also let you tinker with your skill trees. Easy-peasy!
