No Man's Sky Chlorine Guide: Where to Get Chlorine in NMS

Much like in the real world, NMS Chlorine is mostly associated with water.

In No Man’s Sky, Chlorine is good for a lot more than just cleaning out pools. You need it to build some of the more useful attachments to your Nautilon (the in-game submarine) as well as Amino Chambers. The latter is a crafting component used in a wide variety of items — from Exocraft upgrades to Multi-Tool weapons. The trick is finding enough Chlorine to fill these needs, which isn’t the simplest process. That’s why we’ve put together this quick guide to the resource! Here are the best ways to find (and craft) Chlorine in NMS.

Let’s get the immediate method out of the way first. Chlorine exists in the form of “Organic Rock” which can be found on Scorched worlds throughout the game. The problem, of course, is twofold. You don’t technically know if a planet is Scorched until you land on it — which takes time and gets tedious as you craft fuel. The other issue is that need to search for the stuff even if you do find a Scorched world.

There are a couple tips to help with this if you choose to search for Organic Rock. The first is the simplest: know that you can see Organic Rock from a distance using the Analysis Visor. It appears as a yellow icon with two stars, but if you hover over it like any other visor icon, it will show the material’s name. At which point you can simply walk to the yellow icon to find your supply of Organic Rock (and the Chlorine gathered from it).

Finding Scorched Worlds in NMS

The other, more complex issue is finding Scorched worlds in the first place. Thankfully, you just need to know the language of NMS planets. Each and every one of them has an adjective visible from space. Just point your ship at the heavenly body and read the text description! Above the list of basic resources, you should also see an adjective: rainy, incandescent, caustic, desert, etc. Each of these indidcates one of several biomes. That means, if you know which ones indicate a Scorched world, you can narrow it down.

Adjectives associated with the Scorched biome include:

  • Arid
  • Boiling
  • Charred
  • Fiery
  • High Temperature
  • Hot
  • Incandescent
  • Scalding
  • Scorched (duh)
  • Torid

It’s worth noting that new biomes are occasionally applied in major NMS updates, which means that this list could be subject to change. Though the gist of the matter is usually pretty obvious. If the adjective means “cold,” it’s talking about a Frozen World. If it means “radioactive,” it indicates an Irradiated world. So it goes with Scorched planets. You’re basically looking for anything that means “hot.” One noteworthy exception is the “desert” adjective, which indicates the Barren biome.

Note, however, that finding a Scorched planet does not guarantee you will find Organic Rock! This is still a relatively rare resource. You can hunt around for it all day and not find any. Not to mention there are actually two subcategories of Organic Rock: the type found on Scorched planets and a type found on Barren ones. Organic Rock found on Barren worlds will give Mordite instead of Chlorine.

No Man's Sky Underwater Salt NMS

Crafting Chlorine in NMS

A much, much more consistent way to find Chlorine in NMS is through crafting. You just need the right materials and the right Refiner! A Medium Refiner will provide more options (allowing you two combine multiple different items into Chlorine) while a Portable Refiner or Personal Refiner requires less effort.

The different crafting combinations that produce Chlorine in NMS are as follows:

  • 1x Chlorine + 2x Oxygen = 6x Chlorine
  • 2x Salt + 2x Oxygen = 5x Chlorine
  • 1x Kelp Sac + 1x Oxygen = 2x Chlorine
  • 1x Kelp Sac + 1x Pugneum = 2x Chlorine
  • 1x Kelp Sac + 1x Salt = 2x Chlorine
  • 1x Kelp Sac + 1x Chlorine = 2x Chlorine
  • 2x Salt → 1x Chlorine (Portable or Personal Refiner)

The tradeoffs here are pretty simple. Two units of Salt turns into one unit of Chlorine. This is fairly slow and inefficient, but it doesn’t require a base. Salt is also extremely easy to acquire. You can find it across basically any and every body of water in the game since the Abyss Update. Usually inside a submerged type of rock or plant. Water is fairly plentiful throughout NMS, as well, but you can find a guide to tracking it down specifically right here.

Not coincidentally, this is also where you can find Candle Kelp, which is harvested into Kelp Sacs. Just look for the glowing plant type underwater.

Salt can also be created from extremely basic resources: 1x Di-hydrogen + 1x Oxygen = 1x Salt. Both of these component materials, Di-hydrogen and Oxygen, can be found in plentiful amounts on any world in the game. Though combing them into Salt obviously requires a Medium Refiner as well.

At that point, you might as well just combine Salt with Oxygen to get 5x Chlorine (which is much faster than purely using Salt). Or multiply your Chlorine by combining it with Oxygen to get 6x Chlorine. This is actually the most efficient method. Though it obviously requires at least one unit of Chlorine to start.

If you’re really allergic to making your own Chlorine, for whatever reason, you can also occasionally find it at Galactic Trade Terminals. Just check each space station and/or outpost and see what they’re selling! Even if you buy just one unit of Chlorine, you can always turn around and flip that into more with a Medium Refiner. Problem solved!

And those are currently the best ways to gather and craft Chlorine in No Man’s Sky. Hopefully this helps you get your submarine or whatever else you’re working on) into tiptop shape. Best of luck in the stars and under the sea!
