The Quarry Jacob Puzzle: How to Free Jacob From the Cage Explained

How to rescue Jacob from the cage in Chapter 8.

The Quarry Jacob puzzle is definitely one of the hardest in the game, since it’s literally a confusing premise from the get-go. Don’t fret, we’ve been through the night in Supermassive Games’ latest horror game and are here to tell the tale, and hopefully make your own stay in Hackett’s Quarry a far more pleasant one. This guide explains how to free Jacob from the cage in Chapter 8 of The Quarry.

If you’re looking for more help, we have guides covering all tarot cards and evidence locations, how to solve the Jacob puzzle, a PSA on how to avoid spiders and what other dangers are featured in-game, and a tips list.

How to Free Jacob From the Cage in Chapter 8 of The Quarry

If you end up tangled in a few decisions that lead Jacob to be trapped by the hunters, you will eventually have the chance to set him free. For this, you have to use an electrical panel that is incredibly confusing, while also remembering the correct doors. But don’t worry, as we have the simple step-by-step solution below.

While looking at the board, here’s the order of the levers you need to use:

  • Breaker 3
  • Breaker 2

This opens the middle door. Then, the game is going to ask whether to continue or abandon. Choose to continue, and then use the following:

  • Breaker 2
  • Breaker 1

That’s it! Jacob will be free from the cage in The Quarry, and the Love’s Labours Lost path will be updated saying that “Ryan successfully opened Jacbo’s cage, freeing him.”

The Quarry Jacob Bug 2

That wasn’t so hard, right? So, the logic is that you always have to use two breakers, so you can’t just use Breaker 3 and open that one door. The right doors are 5 and 3, so that’s 3+2 and then 2+1. The key detail here is to avoid Breaker 4 entirely, as that one is connected to the door where the werewolf is trapped.

Opening door 4 is going to, well, leave Jacob exposed. It’s likely that the character you’re using may attempt to escape afterward, which is going to leave Jacob exposed. Alternatively, you can opt to not attempt to free him at all and avoid this puzzle altogether, but that’s going to depend on the type of playthrough you’re following, as well as whether or not you’re interested in the character at all. That being said, freeing the werewolf is going to have its own set of consequences.

If you’re curious about what happens with the cages if you end up solving The Quarry Jacob puzzle, well, in my experience Laura ended up opening them later during an encounter. She breaks an electrical panel to create a distraction, but while doing so ends up opening the cages. The werewolf is, in fact, liberated during the process, so you’re going to have to deal with them later.

As for how Jacob ends up in this mess, well, it depends on how his ventures around the woods end up going. I was fairly friendly with the hunters, to the point where I allowed them to throw blood on his face, which is a good way of keeping him alive by the way. But the bear trap got him in the end, and while I didn’t show restraint at any moment, the outcome is quite unfortunate either way.
