Smash Ultimate doesn’t just have an officially license Nintendo character with an arm cannon. It has Mega Man, the blue bomber himself, to round out the limb-based cannon club. Joking aside, this cutesy hero packs a lot more than a single weapon. Just like in his own games, he can deploy several different styles of weapon based on the bosses he once defeated. That packs a lot of variety into one very small package. But that pretty much sums up Smash Ultimate in general.

Mega Man has appeared on just about every console under the sun, at one point or another, but the legacy started on the Nintendo Entertainment System. So it’s no wonder that Nintendo wanted to bring the robot boy into the fold of the Smash Ultimate roster. But it’s not just his original incarnation that got an invite. Practically every member of the Mega Man family appears for the blue bomber’s Final Smash in a single attack.
According to Nintendo description of Mega Man…
Mega Man’s standard and special moves use weapons copied from the bosses he’s fought throughout the Mega Man series, so he has more projectiles than any other fighter. His Final Smash now features Proto Man and Bass!
Mega Man Moves
Metal Blade (B) – Throws Metal Man’s spinning saw, which goes through foes. The direction it travels can be chosen.
Crash Bomber (Side + B) – Fires Crash Man’s bomb, which attaches to any opponent in its path and explodes.
Rush Coil (Up + B) – Summons his faithful dog, Rush, to propel him to new heights.
Leaf Shield (Down + B) – Fires Wood Man’s leaves, which can be used to protect himself if the button is held.
Meta Legends (Final Smash) – Mega Man fire the Black Hole Bomb forward and draws in opponents. Anyone pulled in faces several generations of Mega Man, as well as Proto Man and Bass, who all fire their Busters in unison.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
The Blue Bomber packs some power, using past Robot Masters’ abilities in Smash Ultimate to bolster his own blaster. As you might expect, he’s got good projectiles, and can close the gap fairly easily with his specials. Overall, Mega Man is about pressure; force your opponent to make mistakes and then capitalize on them. But do it quickly.
Weaknesses
Where Mega Man struggles is in his melee ability. Foes with longer reach can beat his stubby attacks. He’s also susceptible to getting comboed. While Mega Man can keep up the pressure, he has trouble gaining the advantage again after a character catches him out. Try and keep the tempo in your corner and use projectiles to ward off fast characters altogether.
Mega Man Outfits
Here’s the one time we won’t complain about palette swaps. Mega Man looks drastically different with each one. It’s also series appropriate, given that Mega Man has always changed colors to coincide with whatever weapon he has equipped at a given time. In a sense, it’s hard to even call this a “palette swap” at all.
