Smash Ultimate has plenty of room for obscure and underutilized characters in its massive roster. But sometimes you just want a classic. The original Mario brothers are, of course, back in Smash Ultimate. And while they may not be the most exciting members of the cast, they each have their own quirks that make them special among their peers. Luigi perhaps has a bit more personality than his sibling, too, so it’s time to take a look at the revamped fighter and learn his quirks.
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. Luigi isn’t just a taller Mario with a higher, floatier jump. The larger sibling brings a couple of interesting wrinkles to his Smash Ultimate entrance. Not the least of which is Luigi’s trusty “Poltergust” from Luigi’s Mansion. His abilities also really show off his goofier, cowardly, and sometimes… vicious personality.
According to Luigi’s official Nintendo description…
He can jump higher than his brother, Mario. His Up Special, Super Jump Punch, will gain maximum damage and launching power when hitting the opponent right at the start. It truly is a “Special” move. He also uses his new Poltergust for his throw!
Luigi Moves
Fireball (B) – Throws a fireball straight ahead that bounces if it hits a wall or the ground.
Green Missile (Side + B) – Charges up a diving attack that can explode with unexpected power.
Super Jump Punch (Up + B) – Punches up into the air with the strongest blows at the start of the attack.
Luigi Cyclone (Down + B) – Spins at high speed, catching opponents in the attack. Repeated presses cause him to float and move a bit.
Poltergust G-00 (Final Smash) – Luigi vacuums enemies with hurricane-force suction. Enemies caught by this attack are damaged and fired diagonally upward, potentially soaring right off the screen! If you suck up an item, it becomes a projectile.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
The less popular plumber brother has a new tool in this iteration: his spooky ghost-vac from the Luigi’s Mansion games. This alone ups his grapple game, letting him seize foes from a greater range and changing up some of his throws accordingly. All of what makes him an odd, yet explosive fighter is still here.
Weaknesses
Still, the Luigi playstyle is unique enough that you’ll probably love him or hate him. His attacks don’t have much range outside his new grab and fireball, and he has a mish-mash of specials from other fighters that seem incohesive at first glance. Luigi is made up of extremes: extremely on or extremely not. You can get a lot out of him if you put in the investment, but fights can seem like an uphill battle compared to more fluid, user-friendly combatants.
