Here's How to Play Teamfight Tactics (TFT) Right Now

Teamfight Tactics is easy to play, but can be somewhat hard to find.

Teamfight Tactics is the latest new “mode” for League of Legends. Although that description honestly sells it short. Teamfight Tactics is practically an entirely new game, with totally different rules than its source material. It’s part of the new genre wave people are quickly coming to call “auto battlers.” And like Dota Auto Chess before it — the mod that kicked off this craze — it’s a helluva lot of fun. But you might not actually know how to download and play Teamfight Tactics. It’s not the most obvious process in the world, after all. That’s why we’re here to tell you how to play Teamfight Tactics right now.

As I mentioned above, Teamfight Tactics is a spinoff of League of Legends. It uses the same characters (called Champions) and many of the same assets. It might play totally different, but it still officially classifies itself as an alternate mode. That’s exactly why you can find it in the same launcher as League of Legends itself.

League of Legends has its own launcher independent from PC gaming portals like Steam and the Epic Games Store. You might already have it installed! If not, just head on over to the League of Legends website. You can begin creating an account by entering your email address. If you already have an account, but don’t have the launcher installed, just select the “click to download” link below the setup window.

Once you’ve downloaded the launcher, you might still need to wait for the client to update. This could even require restarting the League of Legends launcher, but just follow on-screen instructions like a good summoner. There you go! Once it’s ready, don’t be alarmed by the mass of information and sub-menus. You just need to hit the big, blue “Play” button on the top left-hand corner of the client. Once you do, you’ll find Teamfight Tactics as a game mode on the right-hand side.

How to Play Teamfight Tactics: Beta Pass & Little Legends Details

Riot is also selling Little Legends: the tiny, cute characters that function as your avatars during matches. These are available in the client store under “Loot.” There are six different Little Legends in Teamfight Tactics: Silverwing, Furyhorn, Runespirit, Hauntling, Molediver, and Featherknight.

Each of these diminutive friends is available, accompanied with a matching icon, for 750 RP. That’s just about $6 — though you have to buy at least $10 worth of Riot Points to have enough to get one.

Each can be upgraded by opening Little Legends Eggs in the shop. There are different variants, series, and star-ups for each of the Little Legends in Teamfight Tactics. Needless to say, you can spend a lot of cash getting the cutest looking avatar (if that’s your thing).

It’s worth noting that you do not get to choose your Little Legend during your first few matches!

Riot Games also says there’s a Teamfight Tactics Beta Pass on the way sometime soon. Think of the Fortnite Battle Pass here with a ranking system, rewards, and more. We should get details on that soon.
