You Can Migrate Your Bethesda Games to Steam, But It's Kind of Messy

Players are encountering multiple errors and not getting deluxe versions of some games.

As the Bethesda Launcher is sunsetting on May 11, meaning that you won’t be able to play any Bethesda games after said date, you can now transfer your library to Steam. While the process sounds fairly simple on paper, many players are encountering all sorts of errors. The support Twitter account has been responding to queries all day regarding deluxe editions appearing as normal versions, missing DLCs, Steam accounts not being linked properly, and more. As of now, most solutions involve submitting a support ticket.

The company announced the retirement of the Bethesda Launcher back in February 22. Now, exactly two weeks before the launcher is becoming unavailable to play games, the option to transfer libraries is available on the official site. This includes any games in your library, as well as expansions, DLCs, and virtual wallets with in-game currency for Fallout 76Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and others.

The problem is that, five hours later since the announcement, players have been encountering all sorts of errors. A popular one details that the “account linking failed” when you try to interlink both your Bethesda and Steam accounts — which is basically the most important step. Others are more specific, such as players receiving the normal edition of games like Doom Eternal and Rage 2 even if they originally owned the deluxe edition.

Bethesda Support has been sharing a few possible solutions in the last few hours. If you encounter the “account linking failed” error, there is a chance that you may have already linked your Steam account to another Bethesda account sometime in the past. Remember all the times you created an account on the fly when accessing Bethesda games with online components? Well, that old email or username may already be linked. Of course, tracking it down can be hard, but there is the option to recover your username in the login window at the Bethesda site. That beings said, if you need to reset your password, you’re going to need access to that old email address regardless.

As for people who can’t see the DLC included in deluxe or collector’s editions, the support account recommends to try and install the game on Steam to download all necessary files, but it hasn’t been a definitive solution for everybody. The upside is that you can still migrate your library after May 11, so it’s not a set deadline or anything. But until then, it seems like the process has proven to be more complicated than expected.
