Smash Ultimate has finally landed on a store shelf near you (or just on the Nintendo eShop, if you buy digital). The celebration of everything Nintendo has also gotten stellar reviews nearly across the board. Even though it’s quite similar to the last Super Smash Bros., on Wii U and 3DS, there’s an enormous number of changes to go over across all the modes and characters. It’s time for another of Fanbyte’s Smash Ultimate guides!
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. This guide is entirely focused on Zelda, the princess of Hyrule. She’s a spellcaster that gets a bit of help from a knight she can summon. Otherwise, you want to keep this lady at range.
According to Zelda’s official Nintendo description…
You might recognize Zelda’s look from The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds game. In battle she uses magical moves to reflect and teleport, and for her Final Smash, she seals her opponents away in the Triforce of Wisdom. If an opponent has 100% damage or more, they will be instantly KO’d!
Moves
Naryu’s Love (B) – Envelopes herself in a crystal tht deals damage and reflects projectiles.
Din’s Fire (Side + B) – Fires magic that explodes after a time or when the button is released.
Farore’s Wind (Up + B) – Teleports herself in any direction. Deals damage when disappearing and reappearing.
Phantom Smash (Down + B) – Assembles a phantom, then sends it charging forward. The timing of the button press determines its attack.
Triforce of Wisdom (Final Smash) – Zelda uses the Triforce of Wisdom against an opponent, damaging and launching them. If the opponent has 100% damage or more, they are sealed away (and KO’d) instead of being launched.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
The wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom has a lot of magical attacks. And now using them doesn’t affect her momentum, making Zelda a much more nimble foe. Chip away at your opponent’s percentage and then slide in to seal the deal with one of her smash attacks.
Weaknesses
Zelda is still a little floaty and lightweight, though, so it’s best to keep your distance from fighters with more powerful close-range options. While Zelda has good keep-out options, a solid read from your enemy could spell doom. Find the sweet spot to keep enemies at just the right range and you should be fine.
Changes
This time around, Zelda looks like she did in A Link to the Past!
Her basic attacks have been changed so that she’s no longer the slowest in the game. Her quicker punches can even KO at high damage percentages.
Din’s Fire and Farore’s Wind have had their ranges decreased and increased, respectively.
Phantom Slash got the most attention, receiving a rework. Rather than appearing from a portal, the Phantom armor visibly assembles itself behind her. The more the armor has assembled, the more powerful the attack will be when you reactivate the move. The maximum power move has been slightly weakened, however, as Nintendo has opted to have it only hit once instead of twice.
Zelda’s new Final Smash is Triforce of Wisdom. When activated, she opens a triangular portal that sucks enemies inside and deals damage over time. The portal closes after a certain amount of time. If the opponent is over 100% damage, they’re KO’d. If they’re under it, they’ll just receive an escalating amount of knockback.
Outfits
Zelda has her standard palette swaps. A few of the latter ones change her hair color to gray, a darker brown, or a more golden blonde.
