Marvel's Avengers Character Guide - How to Unlock Every Character

So you want to form a team of Earth’s mightiest heroes? Marvel’s Avengers is the latest game from developer Crystal Dynamics and it allows players top step in the shoes of iconic characters like Iron Man, Hulk, and Ms. Marvel. Combining beat em’ up style gameplay with a loot system similar to Destiny 2 or The Division 2, Avengers is all about growing your own personal version of these superheroes. With six heroes available at launch  (and many more on the way), players will want to fill out their Avenger’s roster as soon as possible. Thankfully, obtaining these heroes isn’t that difficult and will simply require you to put some time into the game.

We will also update this guide when new heroes such as the recently revealed Kate Bishop become available.

How to Unlock Every Character in Marvel’s Avengers

Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel)

Kamala is the main protagonist of Marvel’s Avengers and because of this, she will be available right from the beginning. There is nothing you need to do to unlock her and Kamala will be playable for a vast majority of the main campaign missions. You might want to consider using her throughout the story, as she boasts not only great defense due to her intrinsic skill, but has a ton of great combo attacks. Plus, the game will force you to use her in certain areas so it pays to unlock some skills and gear for Kamala.

Hulk

The Hulk is the second character you will unlock in Marvel’s Avengers as he becomes playable roughly 90 minutes into the story. Once you unlock the story mission Snowy Tundra, this offensive powerhouse will be all yours. Far and away the biggest character, Hulk is capable of both absorbing and dealing a ton of damage Unlike others who rely on flashy combo or range moves, Hulk focuses on just smashing his enemies into bits. If you’re not a terribly skilled player, Hulk is perfect for beginners.

Iron Man

Iron Man is the third character you’ll obtain and we be unlocked around 2-3 hours into Marvel’s Avengers. Once you finish the mission House Call, Iron Man will join your team and can be used during missions. Similar to Kamala, there will be quite a few portions of the story where you are forced to use Tony Stark in some capacity. This superhero is all about using his mobility and gadgets to blast foes at range. While you can use him to just punch enemies, Iron Man excels at fighting from a distance. This makes him a great support unit that can take care of targets that are distracted fighting others.

Black Widow

Your next hero will not come for another few hours. Once you begin playing the mission To Stand Alone, you’ll unlock and get to play as Black Widow about halfway through this level. Remember, you have to actually complete To Stand Alone to earn Black Widow. This is a damage hero that is great for both close and long-distance fighting. Boasting some seriously impressive combos, Black Widow can isolate enemies to quickly kill them. With the ability to cloak or use her dual pistols, there’s rarely a scenario where Black Window cannot be useful.

Thor / Captain America

We are combining these two since they’re unlocked at the same time. While you will play as Thor a little earlier in the game, he will quickly leave and not be available until you finish the mission Testing 1…2…3. The same goes for Captain America, who is tied to this campaign level, so you’ll earn two for the price of one. Unfortunately, this isn’t until the very end of the game, so you’ll need to put at least 8 hours into the main story before they’re unlocked. After you’ve obtained them both, there won’t be any more heroes for you to obtain in Marvel’s Avengers base game.
