It’s always incredible when you see something from the world of a video game brought to life in reality, but this scale model of one of Final Fantasy XIV’s starting cities is absolutely breathtaking. Built by developers Square Enix to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the game’s release, the diorama model of Ul’Dah, entitled A New Hope, was unveiled today on a special site.
On the site, in-depth pictures of the model are available, along with a video detailing its construction. As per the site, the model shows off: “The bustling markets, the oft-visited guilds─these familiar sights and more have been lovingly recreated in a 1/180 scale (approx.) model. Relive the memories of your adventures as you take in the streets of Ul’dah from an entirely new perspective.”
The model, which appears to be several feet high and multiple feet wide, maps Ul’dah in its entirety, from the gated entrances of The Steps of Nald, to the busy shops of The Steps of Thal, and the grand Citadel in the center. Each of the towers are topped with domes, and even the city’s Airship Landing is modeled, extending out from the upper levels of the impressive structure. The diorama also lights up, with the windows of the grand citadel and palace shining out across the city.
While the details in the model are exacting, details on the model’s construction are unfortunately sparse. It’s unknown which artists and modelers were involved. As per the video, much of the construction seems to have been painstakingly built using laser-cut MDF, card stock, and polystyrene. Hand-painted models of FFXIV characters wander the street, giving the city its trademark bustling feel. If your eyes are keen, you’ll see that some of the figures are familiar faces such as Ardbert and Sigurgu.
Some may question why the other cities of FFXIV didn’t get the same treatment. But Ul’dah seems perfect for this kind of model, being one of the largest metropolises we see in-game. Besides, think of the poor model maker who’d have to paint the hundreds of AFKers around the Aetheryte if they constructed Limsa Lominsa.
You can see more of the model on the special site, and watch the video on the official Final Fantasy XIV YouTube channel.
