Just as Bungie launched Destiny 2: Into the Light on April 9, the developer also revealed during a developer preview for the upcoming The Final Shape expansion that players will unlock the new Prismatic Subclass.
"Guardians will wield the Light and Darkness together for the first time to unleash the Prismatic subclass," a press release reads. "This subclass introduces new options to enhance and customize each playstyle with the combination of multiple element types. Also, each class will get a unique grenade that combines multiple subclass elements: Warlocks will have Stasis/Void, Titans will have Strand/Arc, and Hunters will have Solar/Stasis."
A gameplay trailer for The Final Shape released with the livestream showcased some of these deadly new ability combos:
Lore-wise, it seems like because the Witness introduced Darkness to the Traveler we're able to channel both Light and Darkness at the same time. In the trailer, the Guardian gets blasted off a cliff by a new enemy from the Dread faction called the Grim but then falls into some energy field shimmering with the same prismatic color scheme seen in the portal that the Witness opened in the Traveler.
It's unclear how much flexibility the Prismatic subclass will have, but one example shows a Hunter with a Strand grapple, Stasis melee, and Solar dodge. It also introduces what's essentially a secondary Super ability called Transcendence that charges underneath the Super bar.
During the livestream, Bungie developers expressed a desire to "transcend" traditional subclasses to give players far more flexibility in their builds. That's in line with the reworks of each subclass element like Solar 3.0, etc. The system, which uses Aspects and Fragments to express certain parts of each subclass's unique toolkit, allows for a lot more customizability than there was previously.
To supplement all this, new Exotic Class Items allow you to take perks from other Exotic armor pieces and combine them for new effects. As the culmination of the Light and Darkness Saga, The Final Shape is really shaping up to deliver something unlike anything that's come before it.
