Savathun is finally here, which means Destiny 2’s highly anticipated expansion has been released. The Witch Queen has players finally confront one of the franchise’s most popular villains in her own throne world. Not only is this DLC introducing a new story, but there are also a ton of new weapons, armor, exotics, consumables, and activities for players to participate in. The Witch Queen also marks the release of the Void 3.0 update, which drastically reworks the void subclass and new exotics to build around.
Along with this expansion, players can enjoy the new Season of the Risen content. Revolving around fighting Savathun’s forces with the Cabal, players are able to earn a cool assortment of powerful weapons. However, if you want specific guns or high stat armor, you need to farm some Risen Umbral Energy. While it’s a bit of a time-consuming process, acquiring this material gets easier as the season progresses.
How to Get Risen Umbral Energy
At the time of writing this, the main method for getting Risen Umbral Energy is by opening the Runic chest at the end of the PsiOps Battlegrounds activity. When the final boss is defeated, two chests will appear. One will be free to open while the other requires a payment of 500 Psychogenic Intel. The latter rewards you with some legendary items and guaranteed Risen Umbral Energy. So far you’ll only get 2 Risen Umbral Energy per chest, which can make grinding this material a bit of a slog.
Thankfully, this can be augmented as the weeks progress and you earn Insight from completing the weekly seasonal story quests. This can then be spent at the War Table in the H.E.L.M. on upgrades to increase the amount of ways you can obtain Risen Umbral Energy. If you are keen on farming this material am lot, I recommend picking up Operational Upgrades (colored red).
Three out of five Operation Upgrades provide secondary ways for getting this material such as completing playlist activities or killing Lighthoarder squads in PsiOps Battlegrounds. Just remember, you can only unlock the upgrades in order (from left to right) so you need to unlock the Throne World Surveillance first. That being said, it’s definitely worth picking up the Operational upgrades since farming the final chest in PsiOps Battlegrounds is extremely inefficient.

Additionally, you can get Risen Umbral Energy by hitting level 2, 52, 72, and 92 in the Season Pass. However, you won’t earn a ton this way, so focus on just farming the Runic Chest and upgrading your War Table. This makes the grind significantly more tolerable as the weeks progress, allowing you to focus more Umbral Engrams into Seasonal armor and weapons. Right now, you’ll just need to grind a lot of PsiOps Battlegrounds and open up the Runic chest at the end.
