A month late to the fireworks show, Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ second summer update is bringing a handful of new features. Some of them will be for a limited time, while others appear to be more permanent fixtures in your island life.
First up, every Sunday during the month of August will feature a fireworks show where everyone will gather around the city hall building to watch fireworks of characters, logos, and custom designs while carrying around their own sparklers. This is fashionably late, considering the Fourth of July is well and gone by now, but if Nintendo wants to keep its distance from that particular holiday to establish its own celebratory month, that’s fair.
Second is the addition of dreams, which will allow you to visit dream islands. These are recreations of other players islands you can go to by sleeping. How is this different than visiting them through Nook Miles tickets? From the looks of it, the other player doesn’t need to be online for it to happen. So if you need something at a friend’s place but they’re not available to play at that moment, this is your way to access their island, or set it up so others can visit yours while you’re away.
Lastly, Nintendo is taking steps at letting people preserve their Animal Crossing: New Horizons data by adding a Island Backup Restoration Service starting Thursday, July 30. This will allow you to upload and retrieve your island’s data in the event of a lost or damaged Nintendo Switch system. According to the official Animal Crossing Twitter account, a more standard file transfer is in the works and will be available “later this year.”

This is the second Summer update Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting, with the last one adding the ability to swim in the ocean and dive to find new museum collectibles. As announced in the new trailer, Nintendo is working on Fall seasonal updates, as well. But there weren’t any hints as to what those would entail, short of a jack-o’-lantern that would imply that something in the update will be Halloween-themed.
