As is becoming the standard at this point, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is about to undergo another seasonal update to bring some holiday spirit to your island. Specifically spooky Halloween spirit, as the next update will be giving you all the tools you need to make your island look like something straight out of the Halloween section at Party City.
The update, which will go live on September 30, is here to emulate the Halloween experience while you stay safely quarantined in your homes, and that means it’s bringing candy to give to your island neighbors, letting you grow pumpkins to use in DIY recipes such as scarecrows, and outfits and customization options to really get into your costume. In the trailer released alongside the announcement, the player was shown making a vampire costume with a new dress and picking from the new skin tone options that will be available to match whatever character you’ve got in mind.
Along with all of the above, on Halloween night, Jack the czar of Halloween will appear on your island. Is he just an animal with a jack-o’-lantern on his head, or is that what he really looks like? Perhaps we will never find out and that will be another mystery about the people in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that we’ll never know. Like who, if anyone, is in the Zipper costume? When Jack shows up, everyone on the island will gather on the island plaza in costume to show off their outfits and trade candy.
Sometime during all this, Nintendo will be rolling out an update to the in-game phones and apps in early October. Specifically, it will be making it easier to use different reactions (emotes, basically) with fewer button presses. Which is good, because Animal Crossing: New Horizons absolutely needs to streamline pretty much every interaction and function it has going on.
The trailer (which you can view in full below) ends with a promise of another update coming in late November, and given that it shows Franklin the turkey’s face next to it, it stands to reason it will be Thanksgiving themed. Which suddenly makes this dark because now I’m just wondering if there will be a turkey that everyone will be eating for dinner in this update and if Franklin is just gonna vibe with that.

Nintendo has been adding new seasonal content to Animal Crossing: New Horizons pretty regularly since the game launched on the Switch in March, and during the coronavirus pandemic it’s kind of acted as a way for people to experience relative normalcy and social gatherings while they’ve been quarantined at home. From holidays like Halloween and the Fourth of July, or even events like birthday parties, graduations, and Pride. Need an idea for a virtual date? Tour each other’s Animal Crossing islands because it’s safer than touring anything else right now.
