Undertale Creator Toby Fox Composed Music For Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

This is the third time Fox has worked with Game Freak.

Today’s just a Pokemon extravaganza of news with the latest trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet dropping for the first time since the announcement of the games. The new trailer shows a host of new features such as four-player co-op and new legendary Pokemon that look a lot like a jet and a motorcycle, but it also quietly revealed the involvement of someone unexpected: Undertale creator Toby Fox.

The Field theme, which plays right after the main theme at about 0:20 in the video below, is actually composed by Fox, who famously wrote all the music for Undertale and Deltarune.

I had the honor of composing the field music for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet!” Fox tweeted. “After creating a concept sketch, Game Freak arranged it into many versions that you’ll hear throughout the game. You can hear a bit of it in this trailer…” In a follow-up tweet, Fox also mentions that he composed several other tracks for the game that have not yet been revealed.

This isn’t the first time Fox and Game Freak have worked together, as he composed the entire soundtrack for the otherwise unremarkable Little Town Hero. Fox also had a track in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, though it was only in the post-game battle content.

“This time, my music is not optional!!!” Fox also tweeted.

You can hear a bit of Fox’s musical style in the Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet field track, especially right around the 1:00 minute mark, where it evokes Deltarune‘s main theme. It doesn’t sound exactly like Fox’s usual stylings, but he himself says that he merely provided the original composition and Game Freak’s composers arranged it for presumably regional variations within the game.

Here’s everything we know about online co-op in the game, a ranked list of how tasty the new Pokemon looked, and how tasty the new Professors look.
