Triangle Strategy Tips Guide - 12 Things the Game Doesn't Tell You

Don't turn your back on me.

Forget about Babylon’s FallTriangle Strategy, the other RPG releasing this week from Square Enix, is finally here. If you are into the likes of XCOM and Wildermyth, or just want to see what the studio behind Octopath Traveller has worked on next, make sure to read our Triangle Strategy tips guide to best prepare yourself for the journey ahead.

Triangle Strategy Tips

There Are Several Ways To Skim Through Dialogue or Skip It Altogether

Triangle Strategy has an absurd amount of dialogue, but there are ways to skim through it or skip it altogether. Pressing A displays the entire text line inside a conversation bubble as the narration continues. Pressing B skips each dialogue completely. For more general prompts, the R button fast forwards dialogue as long as you press it down, while ZR activates Auto Mode — you can mix the latter with A to get slightly ahead if you want.

Area Spells Like Scorch Don’t Hurt Friendly Units

You may be afraid of using spells that attack an area whenever there are friendly units nearby, but don’t worry. Always double-check the attack’s description — if it specifies that the attack only affects enemies and your units aren’t blinking in red, you’re safe to use it.

Don’t Turn Your Back on Anyone

This may seem like one of the most obvious Triangle Strategy tips, but really, don’t turn your back on any nearby enemy. Depending on your position, sometimes this is easier said than done — enemies can still flank your characters and get behind them for a critical strike. But if you’re close to another friendly unit or, better yet, a structure you can use to cover your back, make the effort before finishing your turn.

Keep Follow Up Attacks in Mind

Speaking of useful tactics you should always keep in mind: Follow up attacks can be incredibly powerful, as you basically get a free extra attack instead of just one (or as many as your unit’s class can do during a turn, but you get the idea). Always try to end a turn with one of your units targeting the back of an enemy. As as soon as you can, get another unit to attack from the front, which will activate the follow up attack.

There Are Items To Pick Up During Explorations

You don’t always get many opportunities to grab items aside from battles. As such, I highly recommend exploring during Explorations. If you see a shine on the floor, approach it and interact pressing A to grab an item. It may range from money to potions, but hey, they’re free and always welcome. Don’t leave an Exploration without, well, exploring beforehand.

Chats During Explorations Are a Great Way To Increase Convictions

A Triangle Strategy tip to keep in mind is to always chat with characters who have a green dialogue box on top of their heads during Explorations. Yes, they can be lore-dumps, but you usually have the chance to respond with one of the three options of the Conviction mechanic (which is basically Triangle Strategy‘s morale system). While there are many opportunities to increase the protagonist’s Convictions during main story missions, these moments can be a great help.

You Unlock the Smithy in Chapter 2

Yes, there is a blacksmith in the game — you just need to progress through Chapter 2 for him to become available at the Encampment. Also, the Provisioner there sells materials in case you need them for specific recipes. They’re a bit expensive, but it definitely saves the same from grinding or waiting for the next battle.

Keep an Eye Out for Your Next’s Healer Turn Before Making Risks

Before you send that unit to the face of the enemy, make sure to visualize when your healer will have their turn to act. It’s easy to go full throttle without paying too much attention to your surroundings, but it can be dangerous. The game always showcases when everyone is getting their turn. So if you have an injured unit and three enemies ahead of them before you can use your healer, try and move them out of the way rather than send them to die.

You Can Inspect Enemies’ Attacks

You won’t know what enemies are planning for their next move. But at the very least, it’s possible to inspect them to know what to expect in terms of attacks and general abilities. You can select them by using L/R or just hovering over the unit and pressing the A button.

The Main Character Can Die in Battle, But It’s Okay

There is no game over if Serenoa dies in battle. You can expect a dialogue prompt, but aside from that, you’re free to continue using the rest of your units. Unless they all fall in battle, you can continue forward.

Look at the Upper Right Corner for Possible Elemental Effects

There are weather and terrain variations during battles — if you look at the upper right corner, you can find information (such as “Freezable”) that can be helpful. It will inform you of which spells to use and if you need to reposition yourself due to an enemy having the advantage.

Press Y To Check on Your Units

While you can also inspect your own units during combat, pressing Y gives you the full picture. This includes weaknesses, attacks, and all sorts of information that may not seem relevant but can quickly turn the tides of battles if you study them beforehand.
