Adult Swim Games and Soleil Games, a studio comprised of veterans from the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series, have announced a Samurai Jack game set before the end of the series’ fifth and final season.
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time stars its titular hero as he fights through different points in human history in order to reach his own and fight his arch nemesis Aku. Check out the reveal trailer below via IGN:
The trailer shows Jack in several different time periods, ranging from a more modern cityscape to what appears to be feudal-era Japan. While the trailer does feature some of the stylish, 2D animation of the original series, the actual game exists in a 3D space that…doesn’t look quite as stylish. The environments still look great, but I’m not sold on the character models just yet, which seem evocative of a GameCube era licensed game.

As the game is being developed by Ninja Gaiden veterans, however, the team at the helm has plenty of experience in the action genre. Jack is seen with a pretty large arsenal, including his trademark sword, a staff, and some firearms at some points.
Along with Soleil Games’ experience in the genre, the writer behind the game has his own share of experience with the source material. Darrick Bachman, who was the head writer of the fifth season of the show that premiered in 2017, wrote the script for the game, and series creator Genndy Tartakovsky is involved in some capacity as well. Both are planning to attend PAX East this weekend to discuss the game further, short of any last minute cancellations like Sony or Square-Enix did amid coronavirus concerns.
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch this summer. This isn’t the first time the series has made the jump to video games, as two games were made during the height of the series’ popularity during its original run. In 2003, Samurai Jack: The Amulet of Time was released on the Game Boy Advance, which was a sidescroller, then a year later Samurai Jack: The Shadow of Aku came to the GameCube and PlayStation 2. This was an action game a bit more along the lines of Battle Through Time. Both were met with mixed reception.
