Because reading the room can be a pretty challenging thing sometimes, Rainbow Six Siege now has a gun based on Gris, as celebration of the game’s taking home the “Games for Impact” award at The Game Awards earlier this week.
If you didn’t catch the ceremony or just haven’t looked into this award in particular, the official Game Awards site defines the Games for Impact award as “for a thought-provoking game with a pro-social meaning or message.”

I haven’t played Gris myself, but based on my understanding of both it and the award it won, representing it and the idea of a “Games for Impact” win with a sub machine gun feels like missing the point on a cross-promotional level. If the award is meant to spotlight games that deviate from the styles of games that typically occupy a lot of space at this show, both in terms of message and in design, a gun really feels like an inappropriate way to celebrate it.
It’s also worth noting that Gris features no violence whatsoever. It’s a platformer made up of stunning, colorful art, which, I guess the gun does capture by having an actual color pallete to speak of. So, again, the venn diagram here just seems to be two separate circles.
Happy anniversary to our friends over at @nomadastudiobcn!

Gris was up against some stiff competition for the Games for Impact award, as Life is Strange 2 was also nominated, which has been celebrated over the course of the past year for its unwaveringly political message on the state of US politics and the effect Trump has had on the lives of two Mexican-American boys drifting across the country. And who could forget Kind Words, which has been using its platform to help connect people in need of encouragement and connection? Other nominees included Jo-Mei Games’ Sea of Solitude and Pixelopus’ Concrete Genie
