Phasmophobia — the game, not the actual fear — is certainly taking Twitch by storm. The four player coop game tasks players with investigating paranormal activity and gathering evidence of the haunting. You aren’t there to remove the ghost. Rather you’re simply scouting for a ghost removal team to come in later. With it being so focused on a cooperative experience, however, you may find yourself wondering if the game supports cross platform play at all. No worries! Our guide will run down the current situation.
Does Phasmophobia Have Crossplay?
It does! Just keep in mind that the game is only available on PC via Steam and VR. The game isn’t available on consoles yet, so there’s no cross platform play to those. The developers have instead focused on making sure you can play with friends even if you’re playing in VR and they aren’t. Whether you play on an Oculus Quest, the Valve Index, or something else, Phasmophobia should support it as long as it’s running on a PC.

The State of Crossplay and Cross Platform Support
Crossplay support only gets more popular with time! Odds are that it will be the norm before too long. Until then, though, the vast majority of cross platform multiplayer games don’t fully include it. When they do, it’s often restricted to players on one console playing with those on PC. Microsoft and Sony seem to view the PC as neutral ground.
Microsoft in particular has extra incentive in the form of its “play anywhere policy.” Typically, if you buy a digital copy of a Microsoft first-party exclusive, you get to own it both on Xbox and PC — free of additional charge. At that point there’s really no reason not to let folks play together. Throw in services like Xbox Game Pass (which is now on PC) and things get even easier.
Sony has historically taken pretty much the opposite approach. The company is far and away the sales leader on this generation of consoles. That incentivizes it not to play well with others — or allow its partner studios to do so on its hardware. In addition, Sony first-party exclusives basically never come out on PC. It’s PlayStation or nothing. Although there are a number of third-party games only available on PlayStation and PC that do feature crossplay (e.g. Final Fantasy XIV).
Even so, Sony has announced its crossplay solution has exited “beta” and should be freely available to all. Maybe PS4 players will one day be able to enjoy the benefits of crossplay, but that day isn’t today. We’ll, of course, keep you updated if the situation changes at some point in the future. As it stands, Kinetic Games hasn’t mentioned whether or not Phasmophobia will be coming to consoles like the Xbox One or PS4, let alone the next generation of consoles.
