Earlier today, word started to spread online that the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake may have been canceled. This was specifically because there were whispers of GameStop employees being told not to expect the game to be released, and to let those who pre-ordered know it wouldn’t be arriving. The game was also delisted from GameStop’s website, and search results only bring up related games and products. Mumblings of it were spreading to the point where Wario64, a popular Twitter user who posts video game news and deals, posted about it.
We spoke to a GameStop employee, who asked to remain anonymous, about the situation, and were sent an image with the following message being sent to stores across the country:
“We have been notified that, the following product will NOT be arriving to stores. Product is no longer expected to release. Our records indicate that your store has facilitated one or more reservations for this SKU.
Please contact your guests who have reservations on this product to let them know that the product will NOT be arriving.”
However, we reached out to Ubisoft, and it sounds like GameStop’s language around the game isn’t entirely accurate. While the publisher is asking GameStop to delist the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, it’s because it’s been internally delayed out of the company’s 2023 fiscal year, which ends in March 2023, rather than any cancelation.
The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montreal. We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake. As a consequence, we are no longer targeting a FY23 release anymore and the game has been delisted. If players wish to cancel their preorder they are invited to contact their retailer. They will be updated on the project as the development is moving along.
Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake was delayed indefinitely in February of 2021, with Ubisoft Montreal taking over the project last month. But it looks like the game is even further away than it seemed, as Ubisoft isn’t taking pre-orders for it anymore.
