MHW The Last White Knight Event Quest – Frostfang Barioth Weakness

Frostfang Barioth armor looks appropriately cool.

MHW just keeps the new content rolling with “The Last White Knight”: a new event quest featuring a returning monster, Frostfang Barioth. The disheveled beastie is a tempered, terrifying version of his mid-level counterpart. He’s also only available during the event quest The Last White Knight, unlike most variants in Monster Hunter World.

This whole setup is odd for several reasons… A tempered monster without a normal version is awfully odd, considering we have nothing to compare it to. Plus making an otherwise average creature time-limited via event quests is unique in MHW. Whatever the reasons behind the change, though, one thing is for certain: Frostfang Barioth armor looks good as hell. The gear sports a woolly, wintery look with a wolfish grin. It’s exactly the thing to add to your collection in a frosty expansion like Iceborne.

Since Frostfang Barioth is an event quest monster, you’ll need to consult the MHW schedule to know when you can fight it. That being said, the creature’s first appearance is/was originally set for Aug. 7, 2020 and lasts (or lasted) until Aug. 19, 2020. Expect it to circle back periodically — especially during seasonal festivals.

Regarding the monster itself, Frostfang Barioth is weakest to fire damage, just like its average counterpart. Variant monsters in Monster Hunter are basically always almost identical to their original forms. They only have one or two minor differences, like new attacks. That means thunder damage, to a lesser extent, also works fine on Frostfang Barioth. But you should have no shortage of fire weapons to wail away on it!

Whether or not Frostfang Barioth is a threat is tricky to say… Normal Barioth is a mid-level monster. It’s also a bit of a skill check for players going through Master Rank in Iceborne. The slippery foe flails around wildly, moves quickly, and has a massive reach. It also tires itself easily — which you can hurry along by breaking its tusks and claws. This causes the creature to slip up and exhaust itself more quickly. According to Capcom, that’s not significantly different with Frostfang Barioth during The Last White Knight.

What did change is that Frostfang Barioth has some new ranged moves. It has an ice breath attack that it can use on a whim, or “If flinched, it may shoot out a breath of ice upon recovering.” Breaking those tusks, however, will further weaken the ice breath attack. That means its more important than ever to break parts!

Besides that, veteran players shouldn’t have too much trouble taking this sucker down. And since you need to be Master Rank 24 to even begin the event quest, you ought to have plenty of tools and training to help you through the fight.

Your reward for finishing The Last White Knight in MHW is, of course, new gear. We don’t have the details on it just yet, but you can see both the Frostfang Barioth Alpha and the Frostfang Barioth Beta sets, respectively, in the images throughout this guide. It looks great. You probably want it. You should go get it! Make sure to take Frostfang Barioth down when The Last White Knight next circles into MHW for your enjoyment.
