IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman series, has announced its next project, and it’s a licensed game that couldn’t be going to a more fitting team: James Bond.
The team announced the new game, currently referred to by its working title Project 007, with the briefest of teaser trailers and an extremely minimal plot synopsis, saying that whatever the game looks like, it will be about Bond’s earliest days of being a spy. The blurb on the studio’s official site for the game implies that the project is in the very early stages of development, and that it’s recruiting developers who are interested in working on its new take on James Bond.

Project 007 (working title) is a brand new James Bond video game to be developed and published by IO Interactive. Featuring a wholly original Bond story, players will step into the shoes of the world’s favorite Secret Agent to earn their 00 status in the very first James Bond origin story.
IO Interactive is currently recruiting elite talent from around the world to join the team that will build out this exciting and unique gaming title.
The open positions to work on Project 007 are across multiple departments of development, from animators, designers, artists, and programmers. So it definitely looks like there’s some vacancies in key places. As such, it seems like the game might be a ways off, which makes sense given the scarce nature of the announcement.

Given that the game will be an origin story of sorts, IO Interactive seems to have been given a lot to play with rather than having to adapt a specific novel or movie. The film series has run into a bit of a snag this year thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, as No Time To Die was originally set to launch in theaters this April, but has since been delayed a whole year until April 2, 2021. The movie will also be Daniel Craig’s final time playing the character, having played Bond for five movies over the course of the past fourteen years. Craig was the seventh actor to play Bond on the big screen, and most recently gained a new recurring role through Knives Out as Detective Benoit Blanc that he will be reprising in an upcoming sequel.
In the meantime, IO Interactive still has a game coming fairly soon in 2021, with Hitman III set to launch on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia, and Nintendo Switch on January 20. The Switch version was announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation last month, where it was revealed the game would be streamable on Switch as a Cloud version, allowing it to run on hardware that usually wouldn’t be up to snuff to play the game under normal circumstances.
