Assassin's Creed Valhalla Gender Selection Guide - Let the Animus Choose?

Eivor leads the charge in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, gathering together a motley crew of vikings to wage a bloody war against England. As with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey though, you can pick the gender of your Eivor, but crucially, you can change the gender of your playable character at any point. In this guide, we’ll explain everything there is to know about Valhalla’s gender selection for Eivor.

Eivor Choice Explained – Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla opens with Eivor as a child, joining in the festivities in their home town before everything goes to hell when enemy vikings forces attack. After watching both their parents perish in battle, Eivor crawls away with their childhood friend Sigurd, only to be set upon by wolves. While Eivor is being attacked by the wolves, the screen repeatedly glitches out, and you’ll hear Layla, the hero of our current timeline in the latest Assassin’s Creed games.

At this point, Valhalla presents you with three options. The first two of these options are to play as either the male or female Eivor and there’s no difference whatsoever between the two gendered choices. You won’t be cut out of quest lines if you choose one gender over the other. The Eivor that you don’t choose doesn’t exist in Valhalla as a non-playable character, like how protagonists Alexios and Kassandra worked in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

The third option is a little different. If you select the option to ‘Let the Animus Choose,’ you’ll periodically switch between playing as the male and female Eivor at very specific points in Valhalla. This is an option that effectively gives you the best of both worlds: you’re not cut out from romance options since you can switch back and forth between Eivors whenever you please.

We should also mention that the choice of Eivor’s gender has no bearing on the plot outside of the Animus, in the current timeline. If you’re familiar with Assassin’s Creed, you might remember how there’s a prolonged plot in our time going on throughout all the main games in Ubisoft’s franchise. Layla and company return from previous games for this new adventure, but as with Odyssey, Eivor’s gender has no bearing on Layla’s plot.

Can You Change Eivor’s Gender?

The simple answer to this question is yes, and it’s a surprisingly easy thing to do at that. Valhalla actually allows you to switch Eivor’s gender whenever you please. To change your Eivor’s gender, simply head into the game’s pause menu. Then, press up on the d-pad, and you’ll be presented with the three base options that you were at the start of Valhalla: female Eivor, male Eivor, or let the Animus choose.

There’s no penalties of drawbacks whatsoever to changing your Eivor’s gender. Valhalla lets you switch genders like this whenever you want, so don’t be afraid to change your Eivor whenever you want. Thankfully, the game doesn’t put any cost on changing your Eivor’s gender. This isn’t like World of Warcraft, where Blizzard would formerly charge players to change their character’s gender.
